So my family and I are trying to find a place to settle down. I'm in the Navy, stationed in Virginia and will be getting out soon. I have a 5 and 6 year old and when I get out I plan on attending Clemson and finding a town close by to settle down in.
My husband and I would like to find a small town where we can have plenty of space to ourselves yet not be too far from a city or town so we can commute for work and have plenty of options for activities. It is also important for us to find a town with a good school district. Any suggestions?
Not a fan of clempson at all. But.........that part of the state is really nice. Just about any small town outside of clempson is going to be nice. Pendleton comes to mind first.

Pendleton is a town that has a historic downtown, specifically its town square, and is able to grow.
Going off topic briefly, Clemson is spelled C-L-E-M-S-O-N, not C-L-E-M-P-S-O-N.

The schools in Clemson are very good (Pickens County, Daniel High School). Clemson is fairly small but offers most basic shopping.
If you want to be closer to a larger town, you have a couple of good options. As previously mentioned, Pendleton is close to Clemson. Schools in Pendleton are fairly good (Anderson District 4) and although Pendleton itself is quite small, it puts you close to the larger town of Anderson. Anderson has quite a few restaurants, a small mall, 2 movie theaters, etc.
The other option would be to live in Easley (good schools - Pickens County, Easley High) or Powdersville (excellent schools - Anderson District 1). Both of these communities would be 15-20 minutes to Clemson and also 15-20 minutes to Greenville. There is quite a bit of shopping in Easley and even more in Greenville. We live in Powdersville and there are quite a few families in our neighborhood have one spouse that works at Clemson and the other spouse working in Greenville.
The SC school report cards are mainly based on standardized testing data but can be useful for doing some research on schools: https://ed.sc.gov/data/report-cards/
One side note - Powdersville High School has only been open 3 years so it doesn't have a full rating on the school report cards yet.
