Beaufort is more rural or laid back. Less crowded. Military town
Hilton Head Island more upscale and resort like
Bluffton is more like suburbia
It would be a judgment as to which lifestyle you would prefer

Being very familiar with the Hilton Head/Beaufort area, it depends on how much money you wish to spend. Also, do you have children, or will this be a retirement home? I would contact a realtor in Beaufort. There are beautiful areas, such as Lady's Island (right outside Beaufort), and there is also Sun City (retirement community right outside Bluffton).
Best wishes,
Donna

I've lived on Hilton Head for 20ish years.
Hilton Head is high price, Bluffton is slightly lower priced, Beaufort is about 45 minutes from Hilton Head and Paris Island (1 of the 2 Marine Depots in the USA) is located there. I can't tell you much about Beaufort other than cost of living is probably lower as far as rent/homes go.
Bluffton has grown up incredibly, however, if you live on Hilton Head and work in Bluffton, the car ride out there can be nasty in mornings and evening - oodles of traffic even with the 3rd lane added on to HWY 278. Bluffton has gotten slightly more expensive due to all the expansions.
If you're Joe Kennedy with money to burn, love the beach, golf, tennis, boutiques, restaurants, etc - go for Hilton Head and spare yourself the traffic headache. The only downside to Hilton Head is that the Super Wal-Mart (if that matters to you) is all the way out near the University of South Carolina - Beaufort (South) Campus, which is really in Bluffton/Hardeville.

HH or Beaufort
L.A. at 5 pm Newport Beach on the weekend, traffic, traffic #%$%#.
I lasted almost 1 minute in HH turned around and went to Ladys Island Beaufort. I can not lie, HH has all the things of a upscale (what ever) A home with a low water dock, on the river, fishing , boating , crabbing , shrimping, out the back door, golf in the front. Now what was the question???
From upscale Orange County Calif. to Beaufort LIFE is good and getting better.
O I miss the trafic of O.C. but can always drive to HH for the stop and go.
To bait or debait, that is the question, pass me that 10 iron to wamp that fish. ,,,,,,,

My son lives just over the causeway, in Bluffton - hopefully, his backyard marsh land won't be drained for construction...... I almost wish I co-signed his home loan

Rents are not too bad and there is actually a few new places to rent,Beaufort used to suffer from a distinct lack of rental apartments.
The town is pretty laid back and if you enjoy golf or boating it should suit you.
