My husband and I have been living on Long Island for 64 years. In retirement, we are looking for an area with milder winters, culture, nature, and proximity to our family, all living in NY and Florida. We love the West Coast, but it's far from family. We are going on a road trip, starting in the Hilton Head and heading south down to the Sarasota area in Florida. We would appreciate any feedback you may offer.

If you're going to HH you might just as well go to The Landings in Savannah. (See on line)

Big advantage with HH over the Landings is the property tax situation. South Carolina has a really good homestead property tax law.

I'm not a fan of either location. Just thought they might put in their travel plans while heading South.

The idea of "Plantation" living doesn't appeal to me. lol

I would advise checking out the "South Carolina" forum for more information and responses in regards to the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort area as it is in that state.

As a Hilton Head resident since 2003 I think that Hilton Head Island and Bluffton are great places to retire. The weather is quite mild, summers are temperate due to being on the coast and there are a lot of things to do. You mentioned being interested in culture, nature and proximity to your family. We enjoy the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra and the innumerable art galleries. We have a chapter of the World Affairs Council, the Civil War Roundtable and OLLI (the Oscher Lifelong Learning Institute). The opportunities to enjoy nature here are boundless, visit the Port Royal Sound Maritime Center, the Pinkney Island Natural Wildlife Refuge, the Sea Pines Forest Preserve (the largest undeveloped parcel of land on Hilton Head Island) or just go for a walk or a bike ride and enjoy the birds. Recreation here is first class, biking surpassed golf as the number one reason that people visit the island last year, there are over 100 miles of walking/biking trails just on the island. Old Town Bluffton is one of my favorite spots, take a stroll through the town to window shop at the boutiques and art galleries and enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the fine restaurants. If you are interested in living in a beautiful area that is much closer to your family in NY than Florida is, you shouldn't miss visiting Hilton Head Island and Bluffton.
