Moving Suggestions
Has anyone done all the research and figured out the best moving alternative? U-Haul, PODS, others? We will be moving from Dallas to Charleston.
Thank you.

Moving
It's been two years since I moved from Mississippi and at that time I did some pricing of Commercial Movers, PODS, and renting trucks.
We made our move in two stages and rented one-way rental trucks each time.
The cost of hired movers would have been 5 times higher than doing the work ourselves. I hired men on both ends to do the loading and unloading and we did the driving. Aside from the savings in dollars we knew when the trucks were leaving and when they would arrive. I have heard horror stories about people waiting weeks for their furniture to arrive and then being charged outrageous prices while the movers held their belongs hostage.
I have priced both U-Haul and Penske and I've always ended up going with Penske. He is a clue If you make reservations with both and then call to cancel your Penske reservation because you tell them U-Haul is cheaper they will usually lower their price to the U-Haul quote. I prefer the Penske equpment and when Penske says they will have a truck for you they guarantee they will have a truck for you. U-Haul just guarantees that will be the price if they have a truck. You might show up to pick up your truck and find out it hasn't come back yet or they rented it to someone else and there you are planning to move and no truck. I've used Penske equipment to move at least 4 times now and I've never been disappointed.

I too will be moving to South Carolina as soon as my home sells here in Florida. (hopefully before the new school year starts back).
I have checked prices/quotes for both U-haul and Penske and have found Penske to be half the price of U-haul. For example without tax U-aul wants $1702.00 and Penske wants $853, and the truck offered by Penske at that price is larger than the U-Haul truck which is the cheapest price quoted by U-Haul. U-Haul prices were $702 to $2606+.
U-Haul allows for an estimated milage of where you are moving too and Penske gives you unlimited miles. You are allowed 4 days for each company and can of pay for extra days if needed.
So on that note... Penske is the company I will be choosing for my move.
Good Luck. Hope this information was helpful

I moved from California to Inman SC and used three Pods. They are the only way to go. I have alot of woodworking tolls, with the PODS it doesn't matter on the weight. Uhaul only allow 12000 lbs which is not much. Having the pods at ground level make a big difference not having to roll every box up the ramp.

Hi,
Having a house built in Simpsonville, SC. I too was wondering what is the best way to move. I heard PODS were too much and you had to have all of your things packed up a few days before you moved, so you'll be sitting with nothing until your actual move in date or waiting for your POD to get to your new house. I think I will also look into a Penske truck. Thanks for the heads up.

We just moved to Ladson, SC from Wilmington, NC and rented a 26' Penske truck and a 16' POD. The POD is expensive, but you get it for a month and can do what you want with it. The advantage was we could start packing ahead of time with things for the POD. It takes a week for them to get the POD to you, so you don't want items you need right away in it. We are renting a place half the size of our home we left, so we have a few days before the POD comes to get some things in order. It made my husbands day to be able to put the piano in it and not have to go up and down the ramp! The POD does have a weight limit, but it is 7500 pounds. My suggestion: Don't move!! I would like to say I would never do it again, but we will have to to get out of this apt! We also hired 4 temps from a local agency and the rate was very cheap compared to calling the local U-haul for recommendations. They were GREAT!! What took us 3 days to pack, they unloaded in 3 hours, and my husband and I mostly just directed. It was well worth the money.
