S.C. native here who's lived 20-plus years in the Northeast: Your search begins and ends in the Charleston area. Rule out Myrtle Beach. It's overwhelmed by tourists. I lived there five years in the 80s, and it's gotten worse since. Back then, locals got a break between say Thanksgiving and late February. Lately, folks there I know tell me, it doesn't let up all year. You can't move on summer Saturdays for the tourists coming in or heading out. Also, Myrtle Beach frankly is not the kind of place that draws a lot of people interested in women's groups or intellectual stimulation. Some people figure it out, but that's my take.
That said, south of Myrtle Beach proper could be possible; think Pawleys Island.
But I think you'd find what you want in the Charleston area. The peninsula is highly gentrified but you might be able to find a good and affordable place. Look in Mount Pleasant or pockets of West Ashley and the beaches. I've read that the Park Circle area in North Charleston is now ironic-hip in certain circles; I find that bizarre but I'm a geezer. Charleston's big enough that you can bump into people with common interests much more easily than Myrtle Beach, Pawleys or even Hilton Head-Beaufort.
