I am going to driving up the end of July with my teenage daughter from Florida to NJ. After researching on google for fun, funky or interesting places to stop and do something, I don't see very much. What would you recommend within 30 miles of I-95?

Recreational stuff like a park with canoeing/kayaking, swimming, hiking, caves, gem hunting, etc. Interesting/unusual stores worthy of a stop, farmers markets, flea markets, etc.

Thank you

saltys surf shop on Hoffmeyer road and Naturally Outdoors on Palmetto street in Florence are a couple of famous local outdoors shops in the east part of the state.

You could go to Lynches River Park just south of Florence and rent canoes or kayaks. http://www.lynchesriverpark.com/lrp.aspx

if you'd like to stay closer to 95, Jeffries Creek State park in Florence is a nice place for a hike. http://scgreatoutdoors.com/park-jeff...aturepark.html

Since I was a kid back in the late 1960's, I always looked forward to a stop at the cheesy South of the Border. I enjoyed reading all of the signs that start 100's of miles away with Pedro giving reasons why to stop. It's cheap and crappy food, trinket gift shops, run down golf - but if you need gas, a drink, and a little break, it's right off the highway.

Other than that, there are things to do if you go 30 miles from I-95 itself. Right off the highway there really isn't much more than the typical gas, food, lodging, & shopping seen anywhere else. I like to take a side trip to Savannah to eat at the Pirate's House. There is 6-Flags in southern NJ, and also the Atlantic City Boardwalk or Wildwood if you like miles of a carnival atmosphere. Take a drive over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, and catch the ferry through Cape May. You skip Washington DC which is also on 95 if you go this way. IMO, most stuff is in the northeast corridor of the highway. There are many beaches along the way up in GA, SC, NC, but mostly much further than 30-miles away.
