The goal is to be on our own away from a ton of people. I love the city, but only to visit. We want to live out in the country and not be surrounded by a ton of people and houses. Walking distance to anything isn't a priority for us. We're perfectly fine with driving to where we need to go. We're very simple people who don't have a lot of needs other than just finding a small plot of land in the county to build our tiny house on

"don't have a lot of needs other than just finding a small plot of land in the county to build our tiny house on"....as I mentioned in my reply to your post in the VA forum, you will have to find a "county" that will embrace your shed idea as far as planning/zoning and permitting. That will dictate where you can legally locate your small home. Have you found any counties in either state willing to accept your ideas/plans ?

I think the tiny house movement looses sight of the forest through the trees. You can just as easily live in a progressive environment in a tiny condo/apartment in a dense city. You might give up having a garden that can produce a weeks worth of produce over 4 months of the year, but in exchange you can take public transporation or walk to a local farmers market and not require an F-150 to do errands and a tractor to do yard work.

You can buy a 3200 sq ft, 6 bedroom house in Detroit for $25K within walking distance to a grocery store. What exactly is the goal here?
Depending on the type of garden, and if livestock is factored in, 1 acre of land can easily produce enough food for a person to live on for an entire year.

OP: If you would do some research in the areas listed in the threads above that you have started you would perhaps more information from the proper departments of the local city regarding zoning, codes, etc.
