According to an incidence report, an Aiken County sheriff’s officer arrested Corley for allegedly punching his wife in the face and head and threatened to kill her while pointing a Smith & Wesson handgun at her. The incident allegedly took place Monday in front of their 8-year-old and 2-year-old.
Corley, 36, told the officer that his wife tried to hit him in the face and he pushed her away.
Corley was first elected to the South Carolina house in 2014, according to prior reports. He was a fierce opponent of the governor’s push to remove the rebel flag from the state Capitol last year and caused a stir by mailing Christmas cards last year that featured the rebel flag with a caption that read, in part, “happier times when South Carolina’s leaders possessed morals, convictions and the principles to stand up for what is right.”
The flag was removed in response to avowed white supremacist Dylan Roof’s murder of nine black church members in Charleston.
According to Capt. Eric Abdullah, Corey is scheduled for a bond hearing at 3 p.m. today at the detention center.
I have heard conflicting reports of this incident. I wonder if he will be suspended from the South Carolina House of Representatives during the investigation and proceedings.
Corley represents South Carolina House District 84.
The South Carolina House of Representatives District 84 seat becomes vacant and will be up for a special election. Ronnie Young, Aiken County Council Chairman, representing Aiken County Council District Seven, as a Republican, and Jennifer Cook Lariscey are reported to be running.
