Hey everyone, so... I'm obviously from Pa. Haven't been on here in awhile! But I'd LOVE a move to warmer weather.. down south. FL is too humid for me more than likely, and The Carolinas are beautiful. Given cost between both SC and NC, I kind of found them to be almost similar? I choose SC My main concern, is weather...

Considering Charleston area suffered with Hurricane Matthew not too long ago, I've been debating if I've wanted to live near more the Greenville, or Charleston area. I cannot STAND the snow up here (I do live in the mountains). It gets icy, I'm terrible at driving in the winter, even though we're equipped with plow trucks and sanders everywhere

So... A lot of threads Ive seen are more from 2010... I'd like a recent update! How is the weather in Greenville? How often do you get hurricanes in Charleston? What are the job opportunities like between the two cities?? I'm either going into the mental health field or business field. That kind of thing... Please keep it mature on here that's all I ask

Both are pretty similar in size and jobs, with different focuses. Depends on your job and your lifestyle.

Matthew was Charleston's first hurricane since 1989. It is not as often an occurrence as you think. Greenville gets some snow and ice storms, but it only affects a few days out of the year, if there is a storm that year.

Otherwise the weather in both is pretty similar. SC is humid subtropical. Mild winters, hot humid summers, warm humid spring, cool fall.

You will likely make more in Charleston, but the COL is higher. Best to come visit and see which one fits you best.

There's a place halfway between both called Columbia. Gets less snow if at all any than Greenvilleā€¦and gets less of a chance of hurricane issues than Charleston.

Thank you Jandrew5..!
I didn't even know that Matthew was the first hurricane in awhile... It's such a tough pick! I would need to visit first I've heard negative things about SC being one of the worst states with crime, but... maybe it's also b/c they actually make more reports of incidents? Unlike New York City I mean anywhere can have crime... But visiting both when I get the chance would be ideal. They're both charming in their own perspectives. Would love mild winters

Hey SCSUfan, yes I have heard of Columbia! That was my #3 pick actually. If and when I can afford to check them all out, I definitely will! It's just so hard, because they all seem lovely... but you're right on the regard of snow and hurricanes And not a terrible distance from either if one wants to get away to somewhere different for the day or weekend.

The crime issue is complex. Generally, you will be fine. Once you narrow down a city and are ready to start looking at communities, then its better to start looking into that, in my opinion.

The dynamic of SC just different than that of PA.

You are very right... and I have a feeling I'm not going to get a straight answer in my head until I visit these areas. I'd probably live outskirts of a city. I know I haven't heard much about Columbia as of yet, and both Greenville and Charleston usually only receives good reviews that I've seen in other threads. Yeah, Pa is interesting It's a nice state, despite crime sneaking up every year. Just done with winters.

Columbia can't get any love except from those who know it well and understand it.

Well that's not true. I heard Columbia has a cool zoo among culture and the arts. Also a great area for riding bikes! Other than that, I guess it's b/c it's more in the middle - not near mountains or beaches, so it's kind of in-between popularity. However, I just watched a video of someone driving through Columbia, and I do think that's a pretty city too Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville are in my top 3 bucket list choices to visit (before any relocation is considered).

I have been to the Myrtle Beach area when I was younger, and while I loved it, I feel that's more of a tourist's attraction than a place to live. I'm aware Charleston also has it's bounty of tourism, but.. I personally think all the cities are pretty!

It's nice to hear your perspective. I'm from the Columbia area and lived in the city of Columbia for 31 years until a year and a half ago. Compared to Charleston and Greenville, it is overlooked and struggles for attention, so it's good to know you were aware of its attractive qualities.
