Snow for my baby girl?
We're discussing a move to the Upcountry, looking for, among other things, cooler weather (and four seasons) than we have here in FL.
I've never seen snow and my 3-year-old lately has been seeing snow in her favorite little TV shows. She's asking me if she can go play in the snow and make a snowman.
Then I read in a few current and archived messages that Greenville has not had snow in recent years.
Is that true?
City Data.com shows that there should be 6.5 inches/year. Is it snowing mainly overnight when everyone is asleep? Is it not an accurate figure?
My husband is from the Midwest and wants nothing to do with really harsh winters again and I can't say I do either but an occasional day of snow for my kids to play in would be wonderful and really make them apreciate the four seasons that much more.
So can I promise my daughter she may be able to make a snowman once we move or maybe it's so little of the white stuff that she'd have to be happy with a ... snow squirrel?

I've seen amounts from 6" down to 1.5" given for Greenville. It may be more likely to get a rare big storm once in a while, and this amount is averaged with the years that get little or no snow. 6.5" may be the numerical average, but I doubt it is normal. Even in my native New England, snow can be hit-or-miss. If I had to guess, based on weather around the country so far this season, you might stand a chance of snow this year. We even had flurries in Orlando a couple weeks ago! They didn't reach the ground, though. And if you really want to see snow, you can drive 1-2 hours into the NC mountains. Highlands isn't that far, and at 4100', they are much colder and snowier.

I have family that lives in the Greenville area. It does snow alittle but the ice storms are the problem. For some reason that area gets more ice than snow.
Franklin , NC is a wonderful area and has more snow. It is close to Highland, NC but is alot more affordable. Highland is a wonderful place. The best food and shops. But take your pocketbook full when you go.
Good luck in your search.

I live in Greenville and will say that in the last couple years we haven't had much snow. It usually only snows a few days out of the year, if that much. When it does snow though, there's enough to play in and build a snow man, yet it's not so much that you're stuck in your house all day.
If there's ice, however, you may not want to try to drive around much. We had a big ice storm last winter that left ice on the roads for a couple of days and left a lot of us without power for a few days. That doesnt happen often, though.

snow in south carolina
hey. when we first moved here it snowed 5 inches in one day. it shut the city down for 5 days, literally. since, in columbia - it hasn't snowed at all. i heard it snowed in charleston about 2 weeks ago but of course nothing stuck. I'm afraid if you want your daugther to experience snow, you are going to have to get to North Carolina. I do have a snowball in my freezer, and I'd be happy to throw at you (or sell it to you on ebay) if you want? haha.
hope that helps. I grew up in Philadelphia where snow was every winter.... i do miss it for my kids but i have found that people are so unaccustomed to snow - that when it comes - it's more of a hassle b/c people down here don't know how to handle it.
my suggestion. grab as much snow as you can before you move, put it in a freezer and bring it with you to play on a sunny day.

We're looking forward to driving 45 minutes into the mountains, making a bunch of snowballs, and packing them in a cooler. Then, we'll drive four hours to the coast and have a snowball fight on the beach!
Seriously, snow isn't pretty after it's sat for a few days. You really learn exactly what's in that automotive exhaust when you see black snowbanks.
I'm all for snowfalls that melt in a day or two!

Awww that's cute!
I've resigned myself to only a freak snowfall in G'ville but glad to know we can get in the car and find a winter wonderland elsewhere without having to get on a plane as we would have to now.

You're only a short drive from the mountains in G'ville. It's around 1000 feet up, but there are places nearby over 3000 feet. You'd probably be also within 2 hours of 5000 foot altitudes and places that high have averages well below freezing. 5000 ft is also around the altitude where weather above 75 F is almost impossible.
