That is about the dumbest comment I've ever read. From the I-95 area are you? And what does that have to do with property taxes?

I was born in Richland County, reared in Lexington County, moved from state to state as a young adult and now reside in Kershaw County. Taxes do in fact vary from county to county, state to state.

For the posting asking about car rates in SC. I got a tip off of the posting to call the county tax assesor's office and if you nhave the vin# of your vehicles they would figure out your tax payment. They were very helpful to me. I have a 2007 Toyota Rav4 and the fee was $310; a 1997 pickup truck @ $80, and a antique 1979 Corvette @ $35. I was told it depends on the type of vehicle to some degree, its year & blue book value, and the county you live in. Payment once per year. Hope this helps.

In case you are thinking about the car insurance cost. I has several quotes done by leading companies in the Greater Greenville area and the cheapest one, with full coverage on two vehicles was $1,100 a year. That was a huge decrease for us considering I currently pay in NJ $2,400+ I guess what you may save in car and home insurance in SC you'll then pay in the form of their car tax. You can't beat the establishment. Taxes, taxes, & more taxes. I will tell you that the difference in property taxes between NJ & SC is like night and day. NJ is the highest property tax in the nation.

Hope this helps some.

I presently resides between New Haven County in CT and the Upper Westside in NYC, I also have a Home in Chesterfield County, SC. My friends think I am crazy to move my three younger kids (12,13,14) to SC with the State's educational problems. I have not spent much time there but the little time I did I know I love it, I really do love my home in SC, I love the fact that I can spend my mornings walking on my 9+ acrees of land and that I don't even need to get dressed as my neighbour is so far away he cannot see me or I him. However, with all that I have heard I am a little worried, as my children will be attending Cheraw's public school as they will have to travel 30 miles return to school each day and the one private school in the area does not accept kids with special needs as they do not have the services to offer them. I just wanted know if anyone had any information on the Cheraw public schools, especially the high school. I would love any takes on this, I must say I love the low, taxes, insurance rates and the winters in SC. Please someone give me some advice. Thanks for taking time to read and looking forward to advice.

Default CT taxes

Nausikaa,

I lived in CT all my life, now in FL.

I know the school systems in CT, I graduated there.
So did my oldest daughter, where as my two younger ones went to schools here in FL. such a difference!
There are some good schools, some bad as in all areas. Same here in FL. With so many kids to one teacher it is very hard to get to all the students. But I know CT hires aids to help in larger classes. My granddaughter is in a magnet school here in FL. and they go that extra mile.
Yes they DO pay way too much for property and in taxes. That's due to the fact the NYC has taken over the lower portion of CT. and you know what prices are like in NYC. But then again they are also paying for the beautiful shore lines and their views. Besides they have to buy snow plows for snow removal, pay over time to the drivers to plow the roads in winter, AND CT is the one of the HIGHEST paying welfare states in the nation! Not so in the south....Thank God!

AND YES I LOVE the south, I'm one of them "damn yankees!" LOL!

Did you think to look into any schools run by your local churches? Maybe closer to home and less of a commute for your kids. My granddaughter did her pre-K years in one and it worked out very well.
BTW I lived on Liberty St in Meriden back in the early '70's I'm sure that has changed a lot too. I guess I just dated myself too.
I sure do miss Modern Pizza in NH....then there is Jimmies....**sigh**

I'm not quite sure what your point is - this thread has got lost. Forget the "damn Yankee thing" with me, because I'm not actually from the north or south. As for whose schools are better - that doesn't interest me either, because I don't have kids in school. The actual question was about car tax.

There is annual property tax on cars in SC. When they are new it is very high, and most people don't like it. After the car is a few years old it goes way down to normal.

My point was, hypothetically, if you are paying prop tax on a house in CT, or wherever of $5,000, and your car tag is $50, would you be complaining in SC to pay $1,500 for prop tax on a house, and $300 on a car tag? Every state taxes differently, and this is the way it is done here, like it or not.

When you buy a brand new car, it hits you hard for about the first 3 years - so don't have 2 new cars at the same time. If you drive older cars, it won't affect you.

It all depends on the ratio between teacher and number of students in each individual classroom not entire graduating class.
