I agree! Our prop. taxes in NoNJ were almost $9K per year. Our prop. tax AND two cars tax (2004 Toyota Sienna and 2005 Hyundai Elantra) in SC comes to about $2,600 per year. No complaints about that over here! Even with the higher cost of water ($50/mo instead of $65/quarter) and having to pay for trash pickup, it's STILL better down here in SC.

Hey folks, we all need to actually spend time living in different places to say things. I was raised in Charlotte, lived inNYC, NYS, and Ct. Data is data; hearsay is hearsay. In Ct this year, my vehicle taxes on my 2005 hybrid were $272, my 2006 Tacoma $420. My taxes on my 5 bedroom/3 bath house were $2300, my 1000sq' rental/water rights are $1600. Go figure. My homeowners is $512. New Haven and Hartford, Stamford have VERY LARGE impoverished populations - yet a vibrancy/diversity that is good. ALL OF CT IS NOT THE WESTPORT COS COB LITCHFIELD thing That's really uninformed. This state, as many, struggles to equalize education for all it's citizens. Gov. Rell gave NO SALES TAX in 2005 on hybrids!! If I moved, to say, Summerville my homeowners could be between $800-1400 for a similar house as I have here. Good, Bad, Ugly EVERYWHERE. But don't say things because you heard someone say them or because you lived in one situation within a whole state one time.
I am not offended, but I know the difference between houses on IOP and let's say, Pickins. All of SC is definately not homogenous any more than Ct.

I'm Sorry...Nausikaa,
If I offended you/anyone, I didn't mean to do that, it was meant as a joke.
So what about lease vehicles? They are titled to the leasing corp. are you taxed the same on these?
Also I have a 32 yr old disabled daughter who is fighting cancer right now. Would she get any forgiveness on these taxes?
Once again I sincerly apologize.

No worries Fish, not offended. About the leasing - I believe leased cars are treated exactly the same way as owned cars (unless it's a company car). No loophole there.
Sorry to hear about your daughter - that's very hard to deal with. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I don't know the answer to your question though, I'll let someone else advise you.

Looks like I'll be paying top dollar then when the time comes. I always lease my vehicles. Too old to worry about who did what to a used car then suffer fixing it. I leased a 2006 Toyota van last year after thinking hard. This way I can get the heck outta Dodge when the hurricanes come, room for cats and kids in tow. I have no intentions of ever sitting thru something like that again! Never mind no: gas, water, electic, the killer was NO FOOD! UGH!

Property Tax
We moved to SC from KS, which also has property tax on vehicles and were shocked by the $ 778.00 we had to pay for our 2006 Jeep Liberty and 2001 Honda Accord. The Liberty has no extras and the Honda was 5 years old. I have yet to see where SC is a cheaper place to live overall.

From what I have heard, some or all of this tax goes towards the schools so if you look at it that way, its not so bad.

ljkbsb, the "cheaper place to live" mindset is always relative to where you are coming from. Obviously, the midwest is different than the northeast or west coast. My real estate taxes alone save me almost $10k a year. Plus I was sending my kids to private school. So as the others have relayed, I'll pay the money for vehicle property tax and pay the $25 for trash pick-up and remain ahead of the game.
