They base it on the age/mileage of your vehicle. I drive a 6 year old Oldsmobile, and I pay $76/yr.

In york county they use a long typed list for vehicle values. Very strange.
The values are too high. They will accept the kelley blue book private party value (low value compared to NADA) if you print out the page and take it to the office. If you already paid they will mail a refund in 2-4 weeks.

I'm in Greenville County and drive a 1995 Mazda that costs about $60/yr and a 2003 Chevy pickup that is about $300/yr
I have a many friends with brand new $40,000 whachamacallits and they are paying in the 800-1500/yr range.
So...all depends on what you drive. It can be an expensive issue if you drive expensive/new vehicles.
Remember, they charge it for all property. This includes motorcycles, boats, boat motors, etc. Our motorcycles were about $200/yr each, and the boat is about $150/yr

FWIW, taxes are payable only on registered vehix. I pay no taxes on my motorcycle (dirtbike) and sailboat (<16ft). I also appeal my car taxes to get the discount with >100k miles.

You mean to tell me if you have a 40k car that you could be paying 1500/yr just to have it. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

Yes CT rates are higher, but they have excellents schools with a 95%+ graduating. My daughters graduating class consisted of 121 students. Not so in the south more like 700+....how do you get to the kids with so many in a class? They don't.

The price of the tag goes down every year with the age of the car. It's only expensive the first few years. SC has some of lowest overall taxes in the country. Part of the prop tax bill is inside car tags. If you didn't pay it in the car tag, it would be on yr prop tax bill. Either way, you pay school tax in every state. if you drive an older car, your tax bill is less.
as far as CT schools being better. no the schools aren't better. there is just a different mixture of students in that state. CT is the wealthiest state in the country, so naturally you have some of the smartest people living there.
why would someone paying $10,000 a year in prop tax in CT, ***** about coming to SC and paying $1,5000 in prop tax, and $400 for a new car tag?
PS: South Carolina overall is considered a poor state. There are pockets of poverty, especially in the Pee Dee area - the whole area around I-95. Then there are cities in SC that are thriving. This not CT. This is a southern state that does not have big high paying jobs - you won't find a Stamford, CT here. You need to do more research.
