My husband and I may be moving to Aiken, SC for a job oppty. We have three children elementry and middle school age. Where are the best schools in Aiken? How is the crime? Is Aiken for retirement or for a growing family?

Aiken is for both. The better schools in Aiken are on the southside. This is where many families and retirees live. It is mostly middle to affluent. It has most of the amenities. Downtown and the west side are ok, too. The north side is rough. I would avoid any school zones on the north and east sides. Aiken has a very vibrant downtown. There is a huge ball park complex called Citizens Park that has nearly 20-plus baseball, softball, soccer, and flag football fields. There is a YMCA on the west side going into Graniteville.
Other areas to consider are the Midland Valley/Graniteville area and North Augusta. The valley has the fastest growing schools as newer homes are being built and its county taxes only, not city. You can be in Aiken in 15 minutes or less from most places in the valley. North Augusta is growing as it has interstate access and is developing its riverfront on the Savannah. Also puts you closer to August for bigger city amenities.

I would look into Hammond's Ferry in North Augusta, SC if you are interested in raising kids. Mead Hall Episcopal and St. Mary Help Of Christians School are schools in Aiken. High school, Mead is the best option in Aiken or catch the bus into Augusta for Aquinas High School, Augusta Preparatory Day School or Westminster Schools of Augusta.
