The internet "scorecards" make it seem extremely violent. Strongly considering moving family to area for new job but am a little put off by this. Is it all isolated to particular areas or is it just part of the culture here?
It's the same story in just about every medium to larger sized city in the state. 90% of the reported crime is typically very isolated in areas of the city that if you drove through it, you would know it. The pockets are obvious and avoidable. However, you do have to be careful of some older, nicer neighborhoods. Mine is a perfect example. I live in a historic neighborhood. My street and the few blocks around my house are filled with beautiful, older homes. However, just to the north about 3 blocks the demographic changes drastically. Same story 4 blocks to the south. So we do get a lot of "transient" traffic and property crimes of opportunity aren't uncommon. You just have to be vigilant about locking car doors, keeping garage doors closed and keeping valuables out of sight.
But most violent crime is associated with a higher drug area. You know the areas when you see them. Avoid them! Don't buy a home near there. And you'll be fine.
