If it’s just a ride from the airport to Summerville than Uber or Lyft is the answer. Probably around $25-$30. But if you are going to be without a car for several days, than a compact rental from most agencies will run you $30 a day.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
From the airport to Summerville is not 45 minutes, it is much less. The airport is in North Charleston much closer to Summerville than downtown Charleston. Use Uber if it is just to get you there, rent a car if you will need it to commute around until your vehicle and goods get there. If you go the Uber route, make sure you mention the cat and have it in a carrier (which you will probably have for the plane ride anyway).

Thanks guys. I'm coming in from Honolulu and they will wait to fill up a container before shipping it with my car inside, i.e., they won't just ship my car by itself, thus the wait. $58 for a single one-way trip sounds a bit excessive, but I guess if the market must bear it. It sounds like leasing a car is the best option all things considered, although I'm kind of a chicken about driving in places I am totally unfamiliar with. Does anyone know if the rentals have GPS these days - to help me figure out where the heck I'm at?

If you have a smart phone, no need for a GPS. Just buy a holder for it for the car and download WAZE. Summerville traffic is a bit rough but depending on where you are going to live you might be able to avoid the major traffic roads.

I don't know about that quote of $58. Is that a premium car, or maybe surge pricing? I have only paid around $20 for that trip in the past.

The airport to Summerville is a straight shot down Dorchester Rd. You don't even have to get on the highway if you don't want to. Not difficult. Depending on where in Summerville you need to go, you could use the navigation on your phone as another poster suggested or print out mapquest or google maps.

I still say renting a car is your best option. You will need to go other places after you get here.
