Kmart #7062 is a discount department store located at 1143 Broad Street, Sumter, South Carolina 29150-1971, between Market Street and Camden Highway in the City of Sumter in Sumter County, South Carolina.
I do not know when Kmart #7062 opened. I do know it had an adjacent grocery store that made way for Kmart #7062's expansion.
Kmart #7062 may be in the process of closing. Its pharmacy closed in 2016. Kmart #7062 is among six Kmart stores remaining in South Carolina.
Hard to believe it’s still open. The few times I’ve been in there the past few years it’s been a ghost town.
The really sad part is that because of the proximity to Walmart, it will be difficult to repurpose the building once they close. It will likely sit unused and vacant for years. Our only hope is that some badly needed higher end retailers like Kohl’s, Marshall’s and others could revitalize that space.
Also, a new stand alone restaurant like Olive Garden or Carabba’s would help. There is definitely room.
Sumter does have two of the best examples of adaptive reuse of an existing big box in the state. Both were done by CCTC. The old Wal Mart and the old Western Auto Downtown. Maybe the School District would have a use for it instead of building more expensive schools elsewhere ? It could also be a good warehouse though I know that is less than ideal

I've always wanted to see the old electric and light plant that sits at the foot of the bridge on Main St. repurposed for something that would benefit the city. Too add to the list of places that have been reused, you also have the old telephone company building which was transformed into a bus station.

Yes that is another good prospect. I wish the city had considered that site for the new water department that they are now going to build at S Harvin and E Bartlette. It's really a gateway structure into the historic downtown from the south
