I'm sure this topic has been visted & revisited more times than most ppl care to, but I for some reason I could not seem to find a related thread......I'm a west coast native and my husband is native To SC ( though he hasn't lived there in years). We are a black/ white couple contemplating relocation. And while im trying to keep with the spirit of adventure, I wonder if the angst I struggle with is unfounded.

1) We would truly appreciate very honest feedback as to which towns in particular are more likely to be interracial friendly .

2) Also is the race issue any different for older mixed couples than the younger ?

3) Does anyone have advice to help us investigate / explore the options ?

Generally the higher the education and income, the less they care about racial issues.

Anywhere inside the perimeter of Atlanta is fine despite the south having a checkered reputation.

Honestly, unless you are in some small hick town where cousin Cleatus just celebrated 10 years of wedded bliss with his cousin Daisy Mae, I really don’t think people give it another thought. I live in Sumter (45,000) and is very common. I work in Columbia and see it even more.

If you are in a town of less than 20,000, then you may get a few looks. Otherwise, be proud of your significant other, enjoy yourselves, find friends of similar interests and worry less about what other people think.

I am white and my girl friend is black plus I am obviously much older then her. We get polite stares but never has anyone been rude to us. The younger people (those under 50) do not care about color differences.

I often go to dinner with my 35 year old niece and we get the occasional stare but as we are both white they usually thing family whereas with my girl friend one can assume not family.

The stares I get with both of them is more age based The woman do not like older men with young woman. Their looks can throw daggers. The men smile with envy......LOL

I think there's a greater chance of hostility when it's a black man with a young, attractive white woman. In that case white men feel jealousy, and it activates centuries-old notions of black men "corrupting our chaste young women." If the white woman is homely, overweight, or old, people don't really care. But in any case very few people would ever express any hostility openly to the couple.

John golf - hopefully that means when the older generation dies off we can finally all be rid of the Ugly elephant in the room .
