Do you know why your federal taxes are not due until the 17th?
The 15th, the traditional due date is on the weekend. So, following federal workday rules, the due day is pushed to the following Monday.
However, this Monday is Emancipation Day - a holiday that South Carolina does not recognize; but still, the Feds do, so the taxes are pushed one more day.
IMO, though, taxes should not be the limits of the holiday in South Carolina. SC should recognize Emancipation Day - as a holiday - or get rid of Confederate Memorial Day.
I already filed my taxes and this is the first time I've heard of Emancipation day or Confederate Memorial day so not sure what to think.
Turns out Emancipation day was started in 2005 and Confederate Memorial day was actually the basis for Memorial day.... Interesting stuff, thanks for shining a light on it. I have no opinion regarding South Carolinas choice to or not to celebrate either.

Confederate Memorial Day is celebrated on a different day by the different confederate states .... In South Carolina and North Carolina it is celebrated on May 10th.
Confederate Memorial Day is by far the oldest observed holiday mentioned in this thread.
Confederate soldiers were individually thirty times more likely to be killed in combat than US soldiers during WW2.
The south lost 25% of military age men during the war.The French lost 17% during ww1.
The boys from SC as a group remained steadfast until the end in defense of their state, families and homes, eventually in the face of certain defeat.
I doubt any of these facts would matter to the OP.
No, those fact don't matter to me and you should be ashamed to even suggest that I a black man (or any black man) should care to honor those confederate losses. The state, through CMD is celebrating losses to an immoral cause, I don't celebrate, not for any reason. And without a balance of recognition - recognizing the loss of millions of blacks; CMD is even more repugnant.

Ditto.
Give me Emancipation Day and flush the other one down the toilet.
Feel free to file you taxes on on any day that suites you.
