Heh, it's a very sad discussion......
I think all small towns are similar also it doesn't depend on the country: United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe etc
There are the same problems: low salary, many old men, no good jobs, young people go to other places..... including the army, navy, marines.

Perhaps the armed forces is an unique chance to receive a chance for own education for that people in many cases...
Only I haven't understood words about druggies, prostitutes and a criminal. It's very strange...
A criminal has a very low level usually in such small cities and to not compare for example with the New York City or Miami.

It's a terrific opportunity for anyone. Don't look at the military as a last resort, but as an opportunity for an amazing career with a solid lifetime benefit package. While you are in the military you are effectively immune to problems in the economy, and the Webb G.I. Bill now pays a FULL four-year college ride with monthly stipend.

I assume you saw the little girl from Dillon on the President's speech. Bless you for your generous impulses. Rebuilding our country is going to be a big job. Plenty of work for all of us.

Ben Bernanke is from Dillon. I wonder if he knows how bad it is?

I was born and raised in Dillon in the 50/60's/early 70's. In fact, I went to school with Ben Bernanke - he was 3 or 4 years ahead of me. I left in '74 to go to college and never moved back, but all my family still lives there and I visit at least twice a year. It saddens me on each trip as I watch Dillon regress more and more.
When I was growing up in Dillon it was a completely different place. We received an excellent education in the PUBLIC schools. Like Ben, I and many of my classmates excelled in some of the country's top universities, attaining graduate and post graduate degrees.
There was a thriving downtown with 2 or 3 nice furniture stores, Belk, Tomlinsons and Moore's Department Stores. We even had Car dealerships and an electronics store at that time! Of course, tobacco was big in those days, and there was plenty of traffic and money around town when the tobacco auctions were held in the big warehouses south of town. I remember when the only fast food place in town was Hardees!
It certainly has changed over the years....but I was shocked to hear about the schools! I had outstanding teachers in High School - 3 years of French with Mrs. Talon, English with Mr. Williams and Mrs. Stephens, Biology with Coach Reeves, Band with Helen Culp, Algebra/Geometry, with Miss Martindale and I could go on. I have always been thankful to them for they well prepared me for the strenuous academics of college and grad school.

He was just there this past weekend for the dedication of the I-95 interchange being named in his honor, so he got a first hand look at the town.
While I'm sure he'd like to see Dillon doing better, I think he has more than enough on his plate trying to deal w/this economy our nation is in right now!
