I still can't believe they fired goober.

I can, I heard he left the fillin station to start a new career as a Hair Stylist with Floyd at the Beauty Salon! Aunt Bee, of course, is livid, as she wanted the job on account of being sick and tired of bein a homemaker for Andy and Opie...this was her chance to become a career woman ! Also, Barney...it turns out...really likes the jails inmates. He was discovered sleepin with Otis in the jail cell...go figure!

By the way, are Matt and Kevin from Dillon?

Default Moved

I can't believe what an overwhelming response I got to this forum. I think I posted this like 2 years ago
I wanted to update it and say,

I did save up money and I did move to Myrtle Beach. I've been here for almost a year.
While Myrtle Beach is a little more "civilized" than Dillon, I still feel SC isn't the right place for me as a whole. I have plans to move out to Phoenix, AZ in about 3 months where I'm going to be starting school. I am really excited! I went out for 2 weeks in the middle of February and had a great time!
I have visited Dillon every now and then but not much. Can't ever imagine moving back there, it just wasn't for me. I wonder how people are doing there after the economy crashed..

Thanks for all the responses and thanks for all the negative comments too because you give a different perspective that I couldn't see.

And as for the guy who wrote saying that if I wanted to move bad enough I could go and live in a Shelter.... I wonder if you would like to move your son / daughter into a shelter? It's not that I'm scared of them, it's just that I know I can do better and do things the right way. (what i consider to be right).

Thanks all

Susana

It's been 2 years since this post and my perspective has changed a little bit towards some of the "bad" areas. I am not afraid to go into the bad areas. I am portuguese, spanish and american although my physical appearance is as if I am completely "WHITE". When I go into more run down neighborhoods and apartment complexes, I get so much **** for having light skin, you don't even understand. A lot of the black girls will give me evil looks like I'm their arch nemisis. I get a lot of comments like, "WHAT'S UP DUDE YA BRO". Sooo much disrespect. After I while, I just grew disgusted with the ignorance. It makes me very sad to see that these people have no basic understanding of culture, no respect for diversity. It seems that they have complete knowledge of stereotypes and watch a lot of tv. I get angry but sad because believe it or not these people do not know any better!
This is just one of things I experienced when I was in Dillon. I don't want to come off like the prissy little "white" girl who thinks that all people that live in the hood are going to hurt me. It is very hard to live in an apartment complex because after a while the things that go on around you start to get to you. I do want to add that not all people are the same and I did meet a few awesome people.

Anyway theres a little more insight im extremely tired.

I am more sad than angered. I am a very observant person, this is the reason for noticing all of these things. I plan to major in psychology. To be honest, it did have to do with Dillon and myself. For one, obviously Dillon has many flaws and it has to do with me because the type of person I am and my personality does not fit into DILLON. I can't have meaningful conversations about things that matter here. I could go on.

I hope you are not judging South Carolina based on your experiences in Dillon and Myrtle Beach, because they are honestly not very representative of the best our state has to offer.

Have you visited any of the other areas of the state, such as Greenville, Columbia, or Charleston? They are considerably larger metros with more amenities than you have had in Myrtle Beach or Dillon. Plus, they are livable, growing cities with fairly stable economies and residents who live there year-round.

The great thing about South Carolina is that it has four distinct regions - Upstate, Midlands, Lowcountry, and Pee Dee - each with its own topography, people, accents, etc. From what I gather based on your posts, you have only experienced one of those four (and I would argue that it is the least interesting of the four). Whether you are sold on moving to Phoenix or not, you owe it to yourself to expore our state and all that it has to offer.

Default Dillon blues

As a recent transplant to Dillon, I can certainly empathize. I have been here for two years now. I have seen all the drugs, prostitutes, crooked cops and government, food stamps, dishevelled and uneducated. I have also run across the pseudo gentry, racist, bible punching and superficial folk too. I decided to stop in Dillon on a whim. I saw the quaint areas, the quiet country lifestyle and thought. Not so bad for a while. I bought real estate, opened a business, bought more real estate and settled in for a few years. I have had my fair share of exasperation, incredulity to the narrow minded opinions, saw the lack of culture and so forth and so forth. If our readers that are so dissillusioned with Dillon had taken the time to read the newspapers the past few months they would have noticed that we have a new Sheriff in town. Many of the crooked cops have elected to leave for other cities and towns rather than give up their crooked ways. If incidences of prostitution, gun toting, drug sales or use in public areas are noticed THEY SHOULD BE REPORTED EVERY TIME. The local police have instituted a new policy where they will arrest every time and on the 3rd offense it is now HABITUAL AND PROMPTLY SENT TO JAIL FOR A LENGTHY STAY!! IN ADDITION TO HUGE FINES WHICH THEY OBVIOUSLY CANNOT PAY. Perhaps one should look at the situation like this........ CAN'T MOVE AWAY........ PERHAPS WE SHOULD CHANGE THE TOWN AND MAKE IT A PLACE WE WANT IT TO BE!!!!!!!! OOPs, don't mean to offend anyone. If one does not like the crime. report it. There are a number of jobs available for people who wish to WORK. They are not high paying jobs and propably not careers but as a business owner and having a higher educated clientelle, I hear the same complaint daily. I wish I could find good help. The trouble here is , that most everyone here is lazy, paid by the government to stay home and have babies, or works for a few months and then goes on welfare or unemployment. This does not have to dictate the path of Dillon. Young people wanting to improve their social activities, should organize groups and show up at the town hall meetings every week with their requests. They should continue to pursue this until someone pays attention. There are huge corporations willing to donate monies for recreation centers and parks. The New Life Church is a group of modern forward thinking jean toting non denomination folks who have leased the old Walmart building and have constructed a Youth center. HUGE!!!! Go see what they have to offer. I am still not thrilled with Dillon, don't get me wrong. I am frustrated with all the old boy thinking , racist remarks etc. BUT THINK OF THIS..... we have two major interstates passing by on either side of Dillon in the near future. We are one hour from the Beach, approx 2 hrs from Charleston, approx. 3 hrs from the mountains and have 50 odd degree weather in the winter. The prospects for Dillon are very bright. The housing market is very affordable, surrounded on either side by state of the art hospitals. Growth is inevitable. Young blood, don't be bored start the revolution!!!!

Hey, Positivee--- I'm so impressed with your post. Right on, dude. It isn't always practical, or possible, to run away to better places. California used to be the land of opportunity...now they are paying the bills with IOUS. New Jersey and New York have prohibitively high taxes and cost of living. There is an old saying....Bloom where you are planted. I, too, was raised in a place here in SC very similar to Dillion. I understand wanting more....more excitement, more education, more diversity, etc.... I was blessed in that I went to college here in the state, and have worked in traveling jobs much of my career. I got the experiences of New York, LA, Chicago and Miami while still coming home to mama's cooking and a very good standard of life for the $$. I'm all for "being the change we seek" here at home. We don't have to run away from SC anymore, people. Let's figure out how to work AROUND and OVER the political system here to make this OUR State.

Thanks for the positive post. It is refreshing. Just wanted to clarify one point. The church in the old Walmart is not non denominational. It is Church of God. Their main building is still on HWY 301 just south of town. I grew up attending that church and my mom and dad, sister and her family are still there. It is a great, foreward thinking church! I hope things in Dillon do improve. It used to be a beautiful old town.
