Sick Of Dillon..
I've been living in Dillon, SC for about 8 months now and I have few good things to say about this place. For one, if you don't look like you're from here, people are very rude and stare. Two, half of the people look like they woke up and walked out of their house without grooming or anything. There are tons of druggies and prostitutes all around the downtown area and the cops MUST be crooked because they don't do anything about it. There have been times when I see a young 15-16 year old kid sitting outside counting his drugs and putting them in a junkie's hand in plain view. There are no jobs here and what's worst is that people use it as an excuse to live disgustingly. They don't try to get out there and make a difference in their lives. There are a lot of people on food stamps. It just seems like people here have no education. It seems like this way of life is all they know and it's starting to make me want to leave. Of course I'm not going to be here for the rest of my life but It's making me want to leave sooner than I planned.
There is nothing to do in this town. It seems like all kids can do is get into trouble around here. There are few programs for kids. I also want to add that there is A LOT of Racist people in this town..On both sides... Blacks hate the whites and whites hate the blacks. It's really sad. And God forbid you dress a little different! I have a kind of funky hair color and style it's kind of rock and roll and I get stared at constantly.

I'm curious why you'd choose to live there in the first place - there aren't a lot of jobs, the area isn't growing, etc. If you aren't from there, it's one of those "land that time forgot" sort of places.

What? They fired Goober?
I'm not dismissing the first posters comments. We need to get her to the city, quick. I'm afraid a good bit of rural South Carolina is like what she has found in Dillon, though there are some exceptions.

Why the heck did you move to Dillon? We put the petal to medal going through there from Myrtle Beach to Charlotte. I can't imagine anyone moving there on purpose.

Not my decision. My Mom is a physician and took a job here. So, I moved in here and got stuck. Luckily I just saved up enough to move (Mom doesn't give handouts) to Myrtle Beach and am happy to say that I'm on my way and then hopefully after school (Horry Georgetown tech) transfering to another college further up north and getting away from the south forever!
By the way, I do not live on the bad side of town, but in this place, the nice places are right beside the ****ty ones. great.

Your best bet is to leave Dillon a.s.a.p.
I actually live in Dillon in a part called Hamer, and I can tell you that you are 100% correct and THEN SOME on your first statement.
People here are racist something serious (NOT everyone, but the majority) and yes, if you look different than they do, they either think of you as a freak (Weird, not sexually,...well, maybe sexually too) or gay, or you are just not from around here period. There are only White and black Americans here. Mexican population is growing rapidly but they are still a minority, and they get picked at badly by the black Americans mostly. EVERY other ethnic group is a VERY SMALL minority and they are considered taboo by the people of Dillon. Yes, I am a victim of that too.
Racial diversity is seriously close to non-existant in Dillon. There is no sense of culture or community either. In some states like Florida, you will see that different ethnic types bring a strong sense of their culture to the city, but that's not the case here buddy. If you don't confirm to the way how everyone else lives around here, then you aren't accepted. Everyone here has either this redneck, country, or ghetto type of thing going on. You do have some people that have sense and act professional, but they are seriously overshadowed.
The education in Dillon is the lowest in the United States, and this is the HONEST TO GOD truth. Even the surrounding sorry @$s city of Latta has better scores than Dillon.
The surrounding cities aren't too much better in terms of quality of life. As a matter of fact, as long as you're within an hr of the border between North and South Carolina, there is nothing but country, graveyards, swamp, and run-down small cities and towns. Crime filled areas are SUPER obvious and they are everywhere. They over shadow the rich neighborhoods badly.
South Carolina is not a kept-up state and is not properly manicured at all. Eveywhere you go, you will see that it's run-down, too historic, grass and weeds are growing up everywhere, and they don't try to develop anything. Abandoned homes and buildings are aplenty and they don't try to tear them down and build somethng fresh and brand new in place of them in order to bring in businesses.
People in all other states complain about how tough they have it where they live, but they haven't experienced NOTHING until they come around these parts.
The only reason I am still stuck here and complaining is because it is SO HARD to find a job here. The only way to find a GOOD job is to go at least 40-50 miles out of town and even then, there isn't much unless you can go a little further where the more professional jobs are, and who wants to do that commute everyday? That is why so many people around here are stuck here for long periods of time, unless they are lucky enough to go to college or they already had enough money to make a move.
I was born and raised here, so I pretty much know how it goes here.

Well the unfortunately reality is that behind the sparking suburban empires of Charleston, Columbia and Greenville is the stark contrast of rural communities 'left behind' and overshadowed by flourishing suburbs. A lot of state money is funneled into the major population centers, leaving smaller towns to fend for themselves. It isn't necessarily that small town residents are not educated, but they do not have the same opportunities that suburban areas do.
This problem, of course, is not limited to Dillion or the state of South Carolina, it is more evident in states such as Georgia or North Carolina where towns that aren't growing shrivel up and die off. Perhaps one day smaller towns will regain ground on the suburbs, but I do not see that happening in the near future.
