Not looking forward to 10 digit dialing. Can anyone from Charleston, HHI, Beafourt, or Horry tell me how it’s been having to do it?

Area code 843 should have split off the Pee Dee Calling Area instead of implementing an overlay. I would not be surprised to see area code 854 exhaust numbers in several years.

I think for local calls, the ten-digit calling is used. For long distance calls in the overlay 1 + area code + prefix + exchange is used.

854 won't run out of numbers anytime soon. 843 also has more numbers left than they originally thought. 864 will be overlayed in the 2020s. Nothing new these days.

Area Code Frequently Asked Questions

If you find a number digitally, say off Google or through a website on your smartphone, the +1 and area code are already added. There's no need for you to dial it out, just click on it. Aka if you google the number for Burger King in Greenville, Columbia, Houston, Vegas, whatever, it'll show up as +1 (area code) whatever. Your phone should automatically do this now whether you live in an overlay or not.

If I get or need a number from someone, I have a habit of getting the area code regardless of what area code they're in. I even have it on my mom's number, though I don't know if I added the +1 or if Verizon did. Seems like half my numbers have +1 somehow. You'll be fine, just update your contacts.

to this day it is still absolutely infuriating to me. It never fails that anytime I dial any of the 4 or 5 numbers that I still dial (numbers that I memorized a long time ago and are easier to dial than search through contacts for) I forget to add the area code.

Ten-digit calling is not a problem if you use a cellular phone.

As long as it's a contact number, you should already have the area code in your phone.
