Stay away from it, it is that filthy!
Remember the worse carnival you have ever been to and times that by 100, that is South of the Border!

Your welcome. When you drive by it, punch the gas so the bugs dont get on your car.
Seriously, it is a dive.

Sunshine Chick is in no way exaggerating with what she has to say about SOB. Acutally I thinks she was being too kind. The reason for all the huge tacky signs advertising SOB, that start hundreds of miles away, is to get your curiosity up and get you to stop. Believe me when I tell you it is a huge disappointment. The signs make it out to be this wonderful place when it is really just a bunch of cheap junk no one wants. If for some reason you do decide to stop and check out one of the cheesy shops, don’t waste anymore of your time going to the others. They all have the same cheap junk in every store there. Oh and one more thing, if the bar is still up and running, whatever you do, DON'T STOP. You just might get shot if you do.

I've been making the trip down I-95 since early 1970's. During the early 70's it was indeed a very nice place to stop to pick up souveniers, pick up sodas, rest room break etc. When my kids were small they would even ride some of the rides. The signs were along the highway even then. So I think at the time the investment in signs were made, they were a worthwhile. However, over the years there has been a steady decline in the SOTB, including its maintenance, cleanliness etc. I just traveled I-95 over the July 4th holiday and got off the highway at the SOTB to use the rest room. Unfortunately, I have to agree with Sunshine Chick. In fact, I didn't feel safe getting out to use the rest room. I don't think the roller coaster or any of that stuff is operating anymore. I believe SOTB was something really nice that was allowed to fall into ruins.

Oh c'mon now! You GOTTA stop at SOTB once in your life and spend $10 on some junk!!! Your life wouldn't be complete if you didn't.
Seriously, about 35 yrs ago we did the old National Lampoon Vacation driving trip to Walley Disney World and we spent the night at SOTB. I was probably 10 and I thought it was the coolest place ever - till I got to WDW that is. Anyway, stopped there oh, about 10 yrs later and obviously it wasn't as cool as my memory remembered it. This Spring, my wife and I, mid-40s both, are on our way back from MB and she starts to pull off 95 to SOTB! I ask what in the heck she's doing and she says "I just gotta see for myself"... we'll never stop again I'm sure but the picture I have on my cell phone wallpaper of her standing next to one of those Pedro statues both of them with the BIGGEST ShE'in grins is the BEST!
Oh and yes... we did spend $10 on junk!

I think it started to fall apart after the owner, Allen Shafer died. This was a few years ago. Have not been there in awhile but i worked at several of the shops during my summer breaks from college. The food at the Sombrero Room was always really good. They used to have good security i guess they cut that out too since people are talking about crime?

Hi I was born in Dillon...I have to agree that South of the Border is for tourist, but if you are traveling through the Carolina's and want some Myrtle Beach items, but cannot make it that way, your best beat is to stop by there. It is a family owned business and like everyone else are trying to make a living...you have to be your own judge,,,but please know that it does not in anyway represent Dillon. Have a Blessed Night.
