The University of South Carolina has re-branded itself as U of SC so the school is not confused with the University of Southern California. Yes, that USC.

Seems like a pretty under-whelming logo to me but then again, I'm not in marketing.

https://www.postandcourier.com/news/...1a8a6ae7f.html

"After conducting interviews and research using in-house staff, the university inked a $238,000 contract with an Ohio-based branding and marketing company called Ologie. The new set of logos, which included slight tweaks to the formal and marketing logos, cost about $25,000 in all and represented a small portion of the contract."

If I got that set of logos for $25,000, I'd be questioning the expenditure of the other $200k+ of the contract. Also, why use an Ohio company for a re-branding effort for the University of South Carolina? Why not at least try to use some in state talent for the effort? Heck, it might make a good senior project for students at the university in marketing or media art. I'd bet they could come up with better logos.

You would be amazed at what these marketing/branding firms make from universities, businesses, sports teams, etc. to design a new logo or logos. Like you said, after seeing some of their results and then finding what they charged, it does make you wonder, I guess it's a good business to be in!

University of South Carolina founded 1801
University of Southern California founded 1880

How about "THE" USC? Works for Ohio State. Enough people from Ohio transplant to SC they would be used to it.

Population doesn’t matter, Carolina was founded first, it is THE USC.

LOL

It might be "the USC" for people in South Carolina but if you say USC to 90% of people in the United States, they think you are talking about a university in California. Wishing it was otherwise isn't going to change that reality.

I total understand the whole, well this college/university is way older than this other one, but I also feel like it's a regional thing, of course people in South Carolina will refer to the university as USC, but the University of Southern California, (which I know is younger) has built a "national brand" so to speak, of course 9/10 or 10/10 people outside of South Carolina will think of the university in LA when you say USC to them.

I feel that ship has sailed, and whatever South Carolina does won't ever change people's perceptions at this point. Now if the Gamecocks built themselves into a football superpower back in the 20's, 30's, 60's, 70's etc. like the Trojans did, then maybe things might be a little different!

Just think about the term OSU, is that THE Ohio State University, or maybe Oklahoma State University, no wait, what about Oregon State University? I'm sure depending on where you are in the country people would think different things when using those 3 letters.

I laughed considering the importance of being founded first when it comes to naming. 1789.
