I dont mean to sound condescending, but honestly, compare living in both areas. Charleston vs. Florence. Were it not for the skyrocketing of the cost of living in Charleston, why would anyone choose to live in Florence over living in Charleston? Come on.....

Back then it would have been an issue ANYWHERE, on both sides of the fence. I dated a black girl for several months after my first wife died. (She was a childhood friend) Her father didnt like, forbid it, threated to kick her out of the house, and disown her if she didnt stop seeing me. My family was OK with it, but my grandparents always gave me the evil eye when I mentioned her. Heck ,my father was a former member of the white robe society and even he approved. (Long story with him.) If the same situation arrived today, I dont see anyone objecting to it. She and her husband are 2 of my closest friends, and anyone who objected to our relationship is dead and gone.
I know, I know. Not the same thing, but my point is things and attitudes have changed. I wouldnt worry about it.
