Orangeburg lost 140 between July 2017 and July 2018 according to the estimates released yesterday. But who knows, maybe the official 2020 census count will show they have gained, not lost.

Visit census.gov, click the menu tab in the top left corner, scroll on the drop down box and click on population estimates, click on vintage 2018 tables, click on cities and towns population totals, click on the towns and cities population estimates link, scroll and click on South Carolina. A table with the state’s municipalities’ 2010 official census count and their population estimates for each year since through 2018 will come up.

Sumter has usually been stagnate.....300 people move in and 300 move out... growth 0

City of Columbia should just annex Harbison. That should be easy (in theory) if they work with the community association board. They should just make one big marketing push and get the entire area to come in.... Give the neighborhood a $10,000 grant for their community center and viola? That's like 5k- 10k people right there no? They can bribe most HOAs to come in... non HOA communities is harder...LOL

There are alot of donut areas in Columbia area and Charleston/north Charleston area. If they all would annex all these areas in these holes , the populations would shoot up all the way around.

No city in SC is hurt by annexation more than Greenville. Urbanity surrounding it's tiny less than 30 square mile city limits.

That's not really an example of Greenville being "hurt" by annexation rules though; city leaders have delinerately chosen not to pursue much in the way of annexation of residential areas.

Not necessarily true as I deal with some of them. Annexation means more taxes to most those homeowners, which are mainly conservative. They don't want to pay more taxes. The city actually welcomes a bigger tax base, but you can't force folks to vote to be annexed. What they are doing is annexing land before it gets developed and working on infill into the current small city limits. That takes time before it shows up though.

I'm saying that Greenville hasn't historically pursued annexation of residential areas like Charleston, Columbia, North Charleston, etc; the city chose instead to focus more on annexing commercial areas and, as you said, tracts of undeveloped land. While annexation is isn't as easy in SC as it is in some other states, it's not impossible and folks choosing to be annexed isn't exactly uncommon. But in many or maybe even most cases, the city takes the lead and sells the benefits of annexation. Greenville hasn't done that as much as its in-state peers but if it did, it's very much possible that the city would constitute more than just under 30 square miles with a population of ~70K.

True. I think we're on the same page.

I dont get too excited about the city estimates as they're all somewhat inaccurate to wildly inaccurate. Hilton Head is the only one imo that's true. Greenville is easily at least 4.5x larger than those numbers. There's over 80,000 people in NE Columbia who are in "Columbia", but aren't counted. I believe there's around 150,000 people with a Summerville zip code.

Still cool to track the growth, but hard to ignore the lack of annexations and all the donut holes.
