Duke still owns a pretty big chunk of land along Jocassee. It was originally slated for another pump storage facility but that seems unlikely now. It will probably either end up being bought by the state to add to the Jocassee gamelands or developed into expensive retiree homes.

in the mid-2000's, I lived in a lake community on Keowee
the cleanest, clearest lake I've ever seen/experienced east of the Mississippi
on clear days, the lake is actually blue reflecting the sky above and one can see the distant SC/NC mountains; sailboats are a routine sight on Keowee

The cleanest large lakes I've seen on the east coast are Lakes Jocassee and Glenville. There are a few smaller lakes that have even clearer water but those two are pretty pristine.

We call in Lake Thurmond in SC. I've always called it that.

Your profile says Greenville so that’s probably why.

Ive been on every lake in the upstate at one time or another. Ive always enjoyed going to Keowee or Jocasee. Both are great for boating, swimming and fishing, and are not near as crowded and Hartwell or Greenwood. My mother lives near the dam on Hartwell. Its not bad, but during the summer it can be crowded on the water.

Side note - When we were in elementary school, we had to learn the upstate lakes. Having already been to most of them I already knew them. When we had our test, I wrote Clarks Hill on the lake for Thurmond, really by accident. Teacher didnt mark it wrong. Its been Clarks Hill as long as I can remember, but I know its Thurmond. When I was in Boy Scouts, we took a trip to the Russell dam. We were able to go all the way to the top and look down. Water was only half way up or so the dam. This was sometime in the early 80s.

I'm from Columbia originally and lived in Aiken for 10 years. Does that help?

I'm 48. I guess you must be well over 50 judging by the saltiness in a lot of your replies on this forum.

Are there any decent sized clean lakes that don't allow power boats? I want swimming but without the noise - yep - I'm just over 50.
