RealID Requirements
Has the state changed its position regarding complying with the federal requirements for RealID? Seems like the deadline for being able to use the SC DL to enter federal buildings and board aircraft is May 11th from everything I have read. I have a passport but my family does not. Is there a substitute ID other than a military one for this?

They have not and likely will not change their position.

Extension
They have not changed their mind but they were granted the same extension as every other state. I think they have until 2010 to comply before our driver license will no longer be the only ID we need. Before it was going to be next month. Military ID or passport will have to be used with your license to even enter a government building. Gov. Sanford actually wrote a compelling letter explaining his position. You can find the letter if you just Google it. SC has also passed laws that would make it illegal to actually implement the REAL id. Looks like I will be getting a passport

South Carolina did not apply for the extension. It won't be granted unless the state applies for it. I just checked today as I am flying and wanted to make sure of what the deadline is.

SC, Montana, Maine and New Hampshire did not apply for or request the extension. Instead they wrote letters to the secretary of Homeland Security stating their opposition to the program. He expressly stated in his letter back to Gov. Sanford that even though Sanford did not request an extension he would grant one just as he had to Montana, Maine and New Hampshire. All of them got extensions right at the end. The official website has a map of the states that were granted extensions. My dad and I fly quite a bit so this was something that was a concern for me also.

I for one hate the REAL ID idea, however I won't be able to fly or enter a government building without one pretty soon. Just another way the government can control what we do, way to go DHS.
