I have numerous friends from college who were from Cheraw. Not one of them returned after graduation. They're parents are paying to support them wherever they go, as long as they don't get stuck in Cheraw with a job.

Cheraw isn't in the Upstate. In fact, I had to look it up on a map, as I have heard of it but had no idea where it was. Looks to be out in no-man's between I-77 and I-95, not far from the NC state line.

Yea, nowhere near being included in the Upstate. I think the original poster should have used the word "inland" as opposed to Upcountry and Upstate.

Cheraw is in the Pee Dee region of S.C., which is the poorest, most rural region of the state.

we moved her and bought a house 5 months ago and we live 5 miles from cheraw and do our shopping there. but as far as opening a bussiness you would have a big choice of buildings because there are just as many empty ones as open ones. there isn't anything to do here that's for sure unless you go to rockingham nc. we go there most of the time because there are alot more things going on up there and it's only a 10 minute longer ride. if walmart in cheraw were to close they would roll up the streets and call it a day. out of all the walmarts we have been to this is the first one that we have never had to wait in line at. we live in the country so downtown areas aren't that important to us . we went for a walk in cheraws downtown area and it was like a ghost town. there were quite a few bussinesses open and no one was evne in the except the people working there. we walked by a barber shop and the guy was just sitting in the chair staring out the door. probably hoping for a hair cut to come along. there is a nice little downtown area it's just to bad there is nothing going on there.

Dear CT Gal,
I have read all of these comments, and while Cheraw isn't perfect for everyone, it is absolutely a great small southern town. If you're looking for the amenities and headaches of a Charleston or a Columbia, then Cheraw isn't for you. However, if you are seeking a slower pace and one of the prettiest towns in the south, welcome to Cheraw. Contrary to the comments here, we do have something besides Wal-Mart. There are several great boutiques and antique shops downtown as well as an amazing variety of restaurants. Cheraw is located on the banks of the Great Pee Dee River which offers fishing and boating opportunities. Cheraw also has a gorgeous state park. In fact, the golf course here has recently been ranked by Golf Digest as the #1 public golf course in South Carolina. Take a walk on the state park's boardwalk that skirts Lake Juniper at sunset, and you'll feel like you're in heaven. With an unbelievable recreation department, arts commission, little theatre group, and the list goes on and on, Cheraw has plenty to do for those so inclined. Check out the town's website, Cheraw, South Carolina for all kinds of information about Cheraw. Come back for another visit -- we're hosting the SC Jazz Festival October 16-18. This time you may decide to stay!
And by the way, this posting is not from the chamber, the visitors bureau, or the mayor. I'm just a regular citizen who likes calling Cheraw home.

Default Hope you'll reconsider!

Wow, I am surprised at all the negative comments about Cheraw! I am, originally, from the area, and lived in Columbia and Charleston for about 15 years. I came back here to raise my son! I have had great opportunities to support myself, and my son started high school this year in all honors!!! Cheraw is a great place to slow down in life, and learn to appreciate community, friends, and many varieties of religion. Our jazz festival is such a tribute to our history. The Spring festival showcases much of that history. I chose to open a bed & breakfast in a historic home to help bring more people in Cheraw, so that, people have a get-away from all that hustle and bustle. My guests, so far, have appreciated the beauty that we have to offer, in a place that supplies much history, shopping (not just Walmart), and the hospitality of the locals. It's a shame, that others haven't gotten this, that have posted. It is not a city, it is a town, not wanting to compete with the cities. Just a place to offer a relaxing, quiet, but, endless interests for many! Come back and try Cheraw, again. My website is Simply Southern Bed and Breakfast. I believe, I can change your mind!

It's great that you have had the opportunities but not everyone is that fortunate. Most people that rely on factory or retail jobs don't have much to choose from. It's not so much about the culture or small town life, but about survival, and and any convenience that might be included, like travel, availablity of shopping, etc.

Cheraw, SC is the most charming little southern town ever!! A lot of small and large bussiness' have gone out of bussines. Locale Cherawians have also lost companys and homes. Really don't know what your real problem is, did you and your family have problems at the last place you lived also?

To everyone........, Cheraw is "THE HEART OF DIXIE" and a wonderful place to visit and live!!!
