Hi all,

We have the wonderful opportunity of retiring early (43) and considering Pawleys Island as the place to go. We lived there many years ago and loved the whole lifestyle when it was just my wife and I. We now have 2 adopted Chinese children that of course we want the best for but concerned what their life will be like away from Mom and Dad and into the school system and outlying areas. Where I probably would not consider Florence, SC or Conway, the Grand Strand seems more acceptable. Your thoughts and opinions are much appreciated.

We have lived in Pawleys for the past two years and have found just about everyone friendly, pleasant & accepting. We have an 8 y/o moving up the 4th grade and I have seen a few Asian students in the Waccamaw Elementary (I think the majority of them have been adopted, too). I have not heard any complaints or incidents involving them and other students/parents.

We have been quite happy with the schools.... also a 16 y/o in WHS. They are opening the new Intermediate school (4-6 grade) this Fall. The HS won the Palmetto Finest award this year as top overall HS in the state but the principal is retiring and they are interviewing for a new one.

Let me know if you have any other questions... I am sure things have changed quite a bit since you lived here.

I think Pawley's Island and a few other Charleston areas are a little racist. (But) that is wherever you go...Overall, I think you will have a good experience there. It's a beautiful place for sure...Nice people for the most part...

i have ben a resident of pawleys island for my entire life. i havent been on this earth but for 18 years and i have expericed some mean ignorant and stupid things said and done to me and friends because we are black but sometimes i belive i deserved it and at others i believe they were unessacary. and i cant count myself out on doing the same but it is what it is.... the purpose for me writing this is to inform every one that their is racism in pawleys island on both sides but it is a very small amount and i believe it is a beautiful place to raise your kids and i plan on doing so myself
