[quote=trinkit;4109578]What I don't want to do is be one of those Yanks that every other sentence has the words "we did it THIS way in Michigan". [quote]

I strongly suggest not using this phrase. Last week my daughter, who just turned 18, and I went to vote in a local election. She finished voting before I did and asked one of the ladies that was in charge of the polling area how to go about doing an absentee vote since she will be in college away from our area come Nov.. As the lady was telling her what to do she finished with "At least that's how we did it in New Jersey". I then asked the lady "Do you know how it's done in South Carolina?" I just can't believe they would put someone in charge of a polling place when they do not know how things are done in the state in which the election is happening. It could be different than in NJ. I then told my daughter we'll look it up online and find out ourselves.

Perhaps I should have changed my sentence to "I am not one of those Yanks that every other sentence has the words "we did it THIS way in Michigan", because I know that is the surest way to turn people off.

But that reminds me that I'm going to need to get things in order so that I am able to vote here.

I'm wondering if anyone can answer these questions for me:
I still have my permanent address in Michigan and will need to change that sometime in the next month or two and I know that I need to:
change the address on my driver's license
obtain insurance for my vehicles
pay the property tax on my vehicles (both 1990's vintage)
obtain license tabs for my vehicles
transfer the titles of my vehicles
But in WHAT ORDER do I do these things? And is there anything else that I'm not aware of?

First you will need your insurance. Then you can go pay the tax, they will not tag your vehicle until you show them the receipt from the tax. If you are going to get your DL at the same time bring with you your birth certificate or passport, your insurance, proof of residency (bills with your name and local address). Bring your title. One stop shopping in Aiken, but you will not get past the *ahem* mean lady at the door if you do not have all of your documentation in order.

When they ask you how long you have been there be sure to give them a date somewhere in the preceding 45 days or they will charge you a penalty.

Great information! Thank you. And I'll be sure to watch out for the mean lady at the door.

I think this thread is lovely. I learned how to do that from all the other females in my family. My grandma could smile at you but also give you that "go to h*** look". My aunts are very strong southern women as well.

if you intend to waste your vote on someone with a D at the end of their name, don't bother registering. This is a solidly Red state & your vote will be cancelled out in short order.

I'm glad to hear that, being solidly "R". Why do you think I chose South Carolina to move to?

Your original post made me smile!

Well, I'm not from the south but I'm moving there, and I'm not going to be living in Aiken but I AM a lady so I just wanted to mention that even us younger ladies have a deep appreciation for anyone willing to open a door for us. At least I do! I never get out of the car without waiting for my gentleman of a husband to walk to my door and open it for me, and take my hand to help me out. Maybe I watch too much Turner Classic Movie channel... Anyway, you sound like a loveable type of person with a neat sense of humor so I'm pretty confident you'll have no issues.

I disagree, a lot of native Southerners are also fed up with the current administration. We may be 'red' but that certainly doesn't commit us to the GOP.

I would comment on some other things, but I do not wish to force myself into another argument.
