.

Way politics in SC works is this:

Take a map of the state and put a pencil (etc) so that it bisects SC horizontally with Columbia on the dividing line.

Most votes for Republicans will come from above the pencil; most will be white.

Most Democratic votes will come from below the pencil; most will be from blacks.

Other than that, Christian Coalition is big there, for better or worst.

You do the number one thing to make you fit into Southern life. You go to church! Yea! The most important thing is to consider the other persons feelings when you say anything. You need to get rid of the idea that there are hard core Southerners that will resent any person moving in. If you enjoy Southern culture you probably won't even be noticed.

Our taxes are not very high here because when you want something, you buy it for yourself. Go find an acre of land in an inexpensive area, buy it and fence it in so your animal can run around in it. Don't ask your neighbors to take food out of their children's mouths so your dog can be happy.

I have seen a lot of people move into our area. They love it that our taxes are so low, but in the next breath they start talking about what they had back home that we do not have. Why do you think your taxes were so high? It is cheaper to do it for yourself than it is to pay for the rest of your life.

Oh, I totally agree about the taxes! "Cradle to grave" government care is NOT my idea of living. I do not understand people who want to get whatever they can get from the government -- its called entitlement, of which we have only the right to "life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness".

One thing I have noticed in the almost-year (since Oct 1 of last year) that I have been here is the ENORMOUS amount of freedom I have here. For instance, where I come from zoning is paramount and everything has to have a permit, thus mobile homes (or for the politically correct "manufactured homes" -- personally I see little difference) are confined to mobile home parks, unless you buy yourself about 40 acres WAY away from any culture or convenience. Here I see some VERY WELL CARED FOR mh's right next to some very nice homes. The trailer parks that I've seen here are just that: trailer parks and I wouldn't live in any one of them.

Let me say this, tho -- it's GREAT to see that kind of freedom, and by no means is this meant as a "put down", so I hope I haven't offended anyone.

The other thing that I've noticed is how pets are treated here -- they're allowed to be the dogs that they need to be, whereas up north they are more confined, registered and licensed. Just one more way for the government to make money.

I LOVE my life down here and have found no reason to want to live anywhere else. I am near retirement age, so this will probably be where I live the rest of my life. My husband just recently joined me here and he, too, loves the calmer, peaceful existence that we enjoy here.

I do NOT want to turn this into a southern version of the north -- the south has its own uniqueness that should never be messed with.

The general political regime I described for SC is a fact that is taught in SC Pol. class.

This is probably the single best and concise description of Southern Culture (minus the racism aspect, of course) I have ever read- including those from scholars who make big bucks from their rightings.

Thanks.
