Coastal Carolina University vs College of Charleston?
I want to finish my degree in Hospitality Managment, but I dont know which school I should go to. Im an in state student so Im not really worried about tuition cost. I went to a to a technical schools so I could get my general education requirements out of the way. I live in Columbia and I do not want to go to USC and EVERYONE goes there. I HATE downtown Columbia. Is one school better than the other or are they about the same?

I've been to both. Went to CCU for my freshman year of college...transferred out to UVA to finish...then moved back down here (DH went to CCU) and did my masters at College of Charleston. I highly recommend CofC over CCU. I think it has a better reputation as a school. Its located in downtown Charleston, which is totally different from downtown Columbia, but I'm not sure what you didn't like about downtown Col., so you could run into those same problems (narrow one way roads, crowded, areas high in poverty, etc.) The CofC campus is tightly packed within a few blocks...so even though its in the middle of downtown, its somewhat separated. CCU's campus is in Conway...not in a downtown area. The campus is spread out...the buildings are newer and its a pretty campus, but there isn't really anything historic about it (the college started in the 60s I believe.) When I went there in 2000, it was only about 4000 students (its grown quite a bit) and it felt way too small (and too much like my HS...seeing the same people in each of your classes.) So many people drop out or transfer after their freshman year there. I was only in the education program CofC, but all of my professors were great. Again, in my mind there isn't any competition. I've talked to very few people who did not like CofC...and a LOT of people who did not like CCU.

You transferred from Coastal Carolina to the University of Virginia? You must have been the best student in Coastal Carolina history!

Hate is a strong word. I will admit that if you must go into hospitality then schools in Myrtle Beach and Charleston are probably a better bet than Columbia.

If you think that's unusual, I know someone that went to Central Carolina Tec, transferred to UVA and then transferred to Francis Marion. Why anyone would want to go from a prestigious school like UVA to what is basically a community college is beyond me.

Haha...thats part of the reason for the transfer. Had a 4.0 at CCU and it wasn't too much of a challenge...but there are (some) bright people at CCU! Some even graduate in 4 years ;-) (I can say that b/c DH went there...and took 5 years :-))

I wouldn't say its a back door. I had above a 4.0 out of HS too (with IB classes) and a strong SAT score...since I only spent a year at Coastal, they took all of that into my acceptance. And, not to discredit myself but its easier to get in if you are from VA (which I was.)
Just make sure your daughter keeps up her grades and she'll be fine!!
