We're going to kill each other with kindness here.......but, I did say "respectfully"
Over the last 6 years, we've been in Greenville, and have been boating on Keowee, Jocassee, Hartwell, Greenwood, Thurmond, Lymon, Robertson, Cunningham. Keowee and Jocassee are clearly standouts.
Now that I make that list, if you're looking for a small lake for viewing as opposed to major boating, you should consider Lake Robinson. Advantages over Keowee (if you see them that way) include closer proximity to Greenville and much lower cost.
I'm a Landscape Architect and work on many homes on all the above lakes, as well the Jim Anthony properties (The Cliffs, etc.) along hwy11. The prices on Keowee have really gotten "upscale". Waterfront lots on the low end seem to be in the 300-400's and it has its share of million dollar+ lots. If that budget fits, then you should make a visit. I don't know who specifically, but often see real estate agents giving helicopter tours. In contrast, you can get nice property on Hartwell in the neighborhood of $150,000.

HELLO GOSHIDE,
I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU ABOUT A BEAUTIFUL COMMUNITY WE ARE PLANNING TO MOVE TO AS SOON AS OUR HOUSE IS SOLD. IT IS A COMMUNITY THAT IS LOCATED ON LAKE MURRAY. LAKE MURRAY HAS MANY BEAUTIFUL COMMUNITIES ON IT. IT IS THE SECOND LARGEST LAKE IN SOUTH CAROLINA. IT IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!! IT IS 50,000. ACRES BIG. SOME COMMUNITIES ARE IN DEVELOPED AREAS SUCH AS IRMO OR CHAPIN AND SOME ARE IN COMMUNITIES THAT ARE VERY FAST DEVELOPING. HOWEVER, THEY ARE ALL CLOSE TO THE BIG CITY OF COLUMBIA. WE ARE IN A LESS DEVELOPED AREA IN THE TOWN OF GILBERT. THIS AREA IS FAST GROWING AND A VERY GOOD INVESTMENT. AT THIS POINT THIS COMMUNITY HAS SOLD ALL IT'S LAKE FRONT AND LAKE VIEW HOWEVER, THERE ARE SOME RESALES FOR LAKE FRONT AND LAKEVIEWPROPERTIES. THE NEW SECTION WHICH IS JUST OPENING ALL HAVE BOATSLIPS DEEDED TO THEM AND THEY WILL BE STARTING AT $50,000THE NEW SECTION DOES NOT HAVE LAKE FRONT AND I DON'T THINK THERE IS ANY LAKE VIEW.
REMEMBER THERE ARE SOME LAKEVIEW AND LAKEFRONT PROPERTIES RESALES NOW.
LAKE FRONT HOMES MUST BUILD 2,000. HEATED FEET OR MORE AND OTHER HOMES 1800. HEATD SQ FEET. BRICK EXTERIOR A MUST.
THERE ARE MANY OTHER UPSCALE COMMUNITIES ON LAKE MURRAY.
JUST GO INTO GOOGLE SEARCH AND TYPE IN WWW.LAKEMURRAYLIVING.COM AND YOU WILL HAVE 4 WEBSITES THAT WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THIS COMMUNITY. IF FOR SOME REASON YOU DON'T GET THE WEBSITES LET ME KNOW.

Upstate lakes are much cleaner and more beautiful than Lake Murray, Marion, or Moultrie. I've spent most of my time on Marion & Murray, just because that's where I've lived. But I'd definitely recommend Keowee or Jocassee over Murray. Marion is probably what you'd call 'the middle of nowhere'.
Lake Hartwell has fairly significant water pollution. The State of SC recommends that you only eat "1 meal per month" of channel cats and largemouth bass out of Lake Hartwell. All other types of fish should not be eaten at all.

I'm Wondering If Anonymous Was Around Lake Murray Before The Completion Of It's New Dam. The Old Dam Was Was Not Very Effective And The Water Was Low Up Until 2005. Since The Construction Of The New Dam There Has Been A Big Difference.
I'm Sure The Lakes Upstate Are Beautiful But It's A Matter Of Taste. I Would Rather Be At Lake Murray With Access To Columbia And All The Nice Towns Around It.

I was around before construction of the seismic remediation project, and during it. I haven't seen the lake since its completion, though. But I wasn't specifically referring to the low water levels anyway, I just don't really like the area in general; just my personal preference.
My opinion is that Lake Murray is somewhat over-developed, and because of that, the water quality isn't all that great. For a very long time, SCE&G didn't require much of a buffer zone between people's 'managed lawns' (read:fertilized lawns) and the water. Many people would clear the trees between their homes and the lake, which creates a problem with lawn runoff. And, a lot of geniuses living on the lake heavily fertilize their lawns, not realizing that it creates big problems.
I don't know for a fact, but my understanding is that the upstate lakes have generally had tighter restrictions on these types of things (for a long time), and typically have better water quality. Not to mention that (again, my opinion) they just look far more beautiful than murray does. On a side note, I really like Lake Wateree, up towards Camden. It's not close to anything, though, so I don't know if that would be a good option for the original poster.

Jocassee is on par with Lake Tahoe IMHO. Think pristine Alaskan wilderness........that may be a small stretch, but not by much.

Lake Keowee South Carolina
Lake Keowee is correct. One of the most pristine lakes around. It is a very large lake as well. Beautiful homes, lots of famous people retire there.
NO HURRICANES since it is in western South Carolina. I am a real estate agent in the area. email me if you would like a relocation package and area/lake keowee information.
