Considering retiring to S.C. Can anyone assist me in identifying an area or areas where we could have a home either on the water of a nice lake or at least with a water view.(very near a nice city/town),not way out in the country. We would only consider being inland enough where hurricaines wouldnt cause catastrophic effects and major flooding. We prefer to have good medical care nearby and a town that has abundant shopping and restaurants. We are able to pay about 900,000 max .Thankyou for your responses.
You might try Lake Keowee, nearest "big" city Greenville, SC. A private golf community called "The Reserve at Lake Keowee" is heavily marketed in Atlanta publications and it looks gorgeous in the ads (find it with Google). The Reserve is developing a village marketplace, too. Not sure about hospitals.
I would try Lake Hartwell in South Carolina. Homes are more affordable on Lake Hartwell than Lake Keowee, although you can still find some that are reasonable on Lake Keowee. Lake Hartwell is a large lake and you can live in Anderson, Clemson, or Seneca depending on where you are on the lake. The Reserves may be too far out for you. If I can be of any further help, please let me know.

I've been boating for 30 years now and have seen very few lakes as nice as Keowee. Neighboring Lake Jocassee is, in my opinion, a world class lake for beauty. No building allowed on Jocassee, but Keowee is a nice second option.
I would like to respectfully disagree with suggesting Hartwell. It is not in the same league as Keowee for cleanliness and beauty. You mention upscale, and that is Keowee. If you had mentioned affordable, Hartwell would be an option.
I'm sorry, but I didn't see "upscale" mentioned in the original message. We go boating on both lakes and I have lived on Lake Keowee. I agree with you about the beauty of Lake Keowee. It is truly a beautiful, clean lake. I was only trying to give more options.
You overlooked only one word: "upscale", while I managed to ignore "not way out in the country!"
We both might as well retire for the evening!
