Being stationed in Parris Island, SC - need help! (Charleston: renting, home)

Hi Everyone,

My fiance and I are about to move to Parris Island, SC and we are facing a few dilemmas. He will be working on base and I will need to find a job when I arrive. From what I have been told Beaufort is a rather small area and I would have much more luck trying to find employment in a larger city. My questions to the forum are 1) Asides for Charleston and Savannah, are there other large cities close to the base? 2) When looking for a home what areas are safe, affordable, and have a variety of things to do?

1) Neither Charleston OR Savannah are close really for commuting in my opinion.Unless you were paid VERY well.Hilton head might pay better but it really depends upon what you do for a living.

2)Are you buying or renting?There aren't REALLY that many unsafe places,you pretty much can tell immediately the less 'nice' neighborhoods.
there have been several new developments that might suit your needs-Shadow Moss is one.

Things to do here....well if you enjoy boating or golf you are set.

What is your line of work? How long will you be stationed in that area? A long commute might not be worth it.... gas is so expensive.
