What about the Water - Mid to South?
Hi ...
I'm almost certain I'm moving to South Carolina. I want about 5 acres (or more?) with either a little ... small fixer-upper house on it ... or I'll just buy a single-wide and put it on the land myself.
I want to be outside of a small town and I want to grow lots of flowers and vegetables ... raise a few animals.
Trouble is ... I keep hearing about a drought in SC. Some say only the northern areas of the state is dry. (Areas in and around Greenville and Spartenberg.) Others say there are months of dryness all over the state.
I'm interested in areas around the line of Manning, Kingsberg, Orangeberg and on down further south going towards Summerville.
Any information about the water situation in those areas?

Are you talking quantity or quality? Of water, I mean.

Thanks
Thanks Geechie North.
(I'm going to have to send you a personal message asking a few questions about Geechies.)
I'm going to look into the link. Many thanks. Are you in SC? If so, what is your experience with drought Vs. having plenty enough water to garden or (small) farm?

The drought is pretty much confined to the northwest part of South Carolina now, but even that has lessened with the recent rains from Fay.

I heard that about the Northwest. Historically more hay and ranches than farms. (I'm curious because I've also heard both south and north)
So ... with a well and perhaps a ... average to small size pond ... do you think a person could water about an acre or two of crops and care for a few goats and one cow? (smile)

.
No, Not in SC. I grew-up in Charleston in the 1950's-60's. Lived there 26 years, moved in the 1980's. I get back every year or so.
I guess I od'ed on Green Acres as a kid, and I always tried to plant a garden on the 3/4 acre we owned. Never had much sucess, because I didn't have a clue.
Currently live in the Upper Midwest. Been here for about 28 years, with some time spent in Pacific NW. I can give you chapter and verse about gardening/farming (we owned 40 acres for about 15 years) near the Northern Lakes, but the applicability of that experience to SC is limited at best.
Worst drought I've ever seen-hope to see- was the one in 1988. Nothing grew! Farmers cut only 1 crop of hay that year, and were able to bale the same day as they raked it- if that quantifies it for ya. I had 36 acres in peas and harvested maybe two bushels.
Good luck in SC.
