Default moving to beaufort

It might be to late to jump in on this, you may have already moved here, or aren't moving after all, nevertheless, Beaufort is "small but trying to grow". It reminds me of the little engine that could, haha, it wants to be big, but the people and the land just are not here. We've just recently witnessed the closing of the local putt putt golf and arcade place, which was sad, but in my opinion it wasn't managed that well either. There is a big military presence here, both active duty and civilian, which tends to drive up rents. And as far as housing costs, there really isn't any difference between HHI, Bluffton, or Beaufort, you have million dollar homes and homes under 200K in both areas. Bluffton does have more variety, but the traffic is really bad compared to Beaufort. Forget the traffic on HHI, I DO NOT, nor need to go out on HHI. We do go to Charleston and Savannah to get our mall shopping done, it makes for a fun day for us and the kids. Beaufort has very little night life, but we're not into that anyways. The downtown waterfront area is really quaint and peaceful, but very expensive for shopping and eats. Crime is pretty low, and the town is quiet and peaceful at night, hope this helps, ccfiredad

Sorry for bringing to life an old thread. But I am considering a job position in the same area. I currently live in Winston Salem, NC. I'm not sure if a small, small town is a good match for us. We are used to the convenience of Wal-Marts, Best Buys, and a choice of several restaurants.

What might be a better match in the area within 1 hour commute for me and my middle class, good school seeking family?

Hi! I LOVED living in Beaufort when we were stationed there. While there is a group of active, "young", retirees living there, there are also tons of young families. Beaufort doesn't have a mall but it does have a Super Walmart, Best Buy, JC Penney, Stein Mart, Kmart, tons of gift stores, and a beautiful, quaint downtown shopping area filled with restaurants. Beaufort also has Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, Outback, Moes, mexican, chinese, barbecue, and of course pizza! Check it out. I would also suggest taking a ride out to Hunting Island State Beach - you will fall in love with it.

We lived on Lady's Island and loved it there. The people we met were so friendly. We had a great church, too. Certain schools are better than others. Coosa Elem. is excellent! I would also recommend Beaufort High and if you can afford it, Beaufort Academy.

Lady's Island is very safe and has some really nice middle class neighborhoods. I would definately take a look at Beaufort before commuting an hour! Good luck!
