Default Cost of Living

We spent a week in Raleigh just before memorial day, checking the place out etc. One thing I noticed in particular is that, not counting auto/house insurance, housing costs and taxes, is that the cost of living (food, clothing, fuel etc.) was really close to where we live in Fort Lauderdale FL. In some cases higher. That surprised me.

Would anyone be able to compare the northern area of South Carolina, around Fort Mill and points west, to the cost of living in either Raleigh or Ft. Lauderdale. Also, would it be safe to assume that the same costs would be good for Charlotte, being as it is so close?

Thanks.

Here is a cost-of-living calculator. There are others available via Google Search. Personally, I couldn't tell you what the cost of living in Ft. Lauderdale or Raleigh is like. I've got a vague idea about Charlotte, but only relative to cities in South Carolina.

I came from CA and live in Tega Cay, SC (which is next to Fort Mill..sharing the same zip code with FM)..so not sure if this will be of help to you...I have found the food a bit higher than CA (plus they don't double the coupons like they did in CA )...the clothing I found to be the same (I guess Target is Target no matter where you are ) The fuel (Gas for auto and home) are cheaper than CA. I might mention if you shop in Charlotte (Meck. Cnty), sales tax is higher than SC..and Gas for your vehicle is more than SC. As far as comparison between CA and SC for quality of life...hands down SC!
