One's slightly north of the other.

Beyond that, it's a tough question to answer, because both states vary wildly depending on the area you're in. Both states have everything from relatively large cities to tiny farm towns.

What kind of area are you looking for?

There is a bigger difference between the eastern and western (piedmont) carolinas than between NC and SC. The eastern carolinas tend to be rural and poor, with below average public school systems. The exceptions would be the coastal areas of Hilton Head, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Wilmington.

The piedmont/upstate (western) areas tend are more urban and attract young professionals. This area includes Columbia, Greenville, Charlotte, the Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill), and the Triad (Greensboro/Winston Salem/High Point).
