It seems to me that dogs are huge sources of pride in South Carolina. In fact, I took my dog to our office today as soon as he finished at the groomer. He was the star of the office. On Memorial Day, clients were signing contracts in my office while the kids played on the floor and the family dog sat in Mom's lap. Dogs are part of the family.

The restaurant, Dead Dog Saloon, was actually named in memory of all those beloved pets who have passed on.

Are you a pit owner? If so, you may find that ignorance is the biggest issue surrounding the breed in SC. You can blame the media for that one. Most dog maulings that are reported are those involving the APBT breed. All dogs have the ability to turn on humans, even smaller ones.

Personally, I owned a pit and she was one of the best dogs I ever owned in my life. She was very gentle and loving towards the family.

With that being said, there are people out there who are cruel in the world that fight dogs. SC has it's fair share of idiots who think this act is cool. It has been known to happen in the more rural areas but that's not to say that it doesn't happen in other parts. There have been instances where officers have shot and killed dogs while working and those dogs are mostly pits.

But, SC has become more dog friendly in general though. With the huge influx of dog owners, things have definately gotten better. You should have no problem owning a dog in SC.

In looking around Myrtle Beach it seems like there are a few dog bakeries near the water. I think there are 3.. that's a good sign

I don't think you could peg a whole state as one thing or another. You might get a better feel if you inquire about a specific area.

Downtown Greenville is very dog friendly. If you visit, be sure to stop by The Barkery Bistro on Main Street.

Myrtle beach is fantastic with dogs........In most areas from Sept to April you can walk your dog on the beach. They can swim in the ocean too.
During our walks with the dogs we have met many other pet friendly people.
I'd say, for renting a condo the Northern area, doesn't have as many that are pet friendly.
I stay in Surfside Beach a southern community. Here there are many pet friendly places you can stay at. There is a section where you can rent a home and take your pet by golf cart to the beach with you. For that matter, take your pet on a little outting to the community park.
There is a dog-park which is around the Sea Gate Village area, a bit off of 17. One side for bigger dogs and one side for the smaller dogs. It works well........
I was amazed at the friendliness of the "pets welcome" communities........Its great, and you feel so at home.......
I am not sure if there is a breed restriction for renting. I don't see very meany pit bull breeds around.

Summerville seems very dog friendly. Every time I take my standard poodle out after getting him groomed like a showdog, people stop and comment on him. Even teen boys and "biker" type men love to pet the big fluffy dog with the frou-frou haircut. It's nice - pets can be a conversation starter.
