Its night and day from California. My husband is from Orangeburg, lived there 23 years before moving. We've been in CA for the past 6 years. Orangeburg is so different from California. There are several reasons why we couldn't move there. First, the races don't mix much. My husband is black, I'm white. In California, no big deal. In Orangeburg, huge deal - both whites and blacks seem to have a problem with it. Second, the schools. My niece was taught about birth control in the second grade in the public school there. Plus, I can see a huge difference in the education my husband received and the one I received in CA. Third, the humidity! Fourth, there is a huge chemical plant which gives me the willies when I drive by it. If I were you, I'd move to Columbia and commute to Orangeburg.

Orangeburg Prep is best school in Orangeburg. Compared to the rest of the US, SC is probably about 20 years behind. Orangeburg is probably 10 years behind the rest of SC and I'd think it would be a difficult place to adjust to. Very little shopping, some decent places to eat, and a Wal-Mart. You are a day trip to the beach, the mountains, and very close to Santee Cooper or Lake Wateree.
Truthfully, your personality, hobbies, and lifestyle will dictate if you the 'Burg or not.

I wouldn't say that Orangeburg is 10 years behind the rest of SC, but in some respects is a microcosm of SC itself.

Whoa, went back and read ALL the comments. Moedog, OP is open to all students, it is not a segregated school. That is very inaccurate misleading comment. I have some very good friends that attended both O'burg-Wilkinson and OP. I myself was a student at OP until 4rth grade.
Pam, what a terrible thing to say. It's not true and most women aren't on anti-depressants.

I cannot believe someone would be this far out---

Something very awful happened here, other than the brutality of slavery and the Orangeburg massacre, but I don't know what it was. I have been trying to research the history of this place because it is solidly disfunctional.

I cannot imagine where you are from nor what makes you respond to the community the way you have- you say THEY are depressed and are on pills- with all the anger and negativity you exhibit- perhaps you are simply un-diagnosed...
In my business I have placed hundreds of people into the community- and maybe 10% of them come up with questions about things being different here that where they 'came from'... usually it is about the 'clickishness' or the 'Southern-ness' of the area. I have been here since 1975 and I have had my moments- but on the whole this place is as good or bad as any other place- if I had a choice to live anywhere in the World I may not pick Orangeburg- heck I may not even pick the USA- but since I am here- I am happy and I think most folks who want to be happy here (who were ever happy or possess the capacity for happiness/satisfaction are in fact content here)- I don;t know what you chip is- but seems you have one- I hope you get help- maybe Orangeburg is not for you and vice versa... thanks

I am not a big fan of Orangeburg. If you are moving to SC I'd say Summerville is a better choice. You would really like Bluffton, SC There are good public schools in Bluffton and the area is growing like mad and it's really close to the beach..

Ricky, how can you say what someone would or wouldn't like more? Not trying to pick an arguement but that is very presumptuous. I've lived in Bluffton and I've lived near Orangeburg and I'd pick O'Burg every time over Bluffton.
The poster also said they would be relocating to O'burg for work.

Two years ago next month at SC State, in Orangburg, the 5-A State Marching competition was held there. Two cars were stolen out of the parking lot and a few busses from different schools, including the one my child goes to, that were in a fenced in area had things stolen off of them. This has never happened at any other competition before.
Unfortunately, the SCBDA has decided to hold it again there next month.

Well everyone has an opinion. I have lived in Orangeburg and I did not like it.. What is there to do there? What is there for kids? What about shopping in Orangeburg? What about jobs in Orangeburg? I grew up in the midlands of SC and there just is not much there except for Columbia.. Let's not forget the crime there as well. My parents home has yet to have been robbed but all the homes around theirs have been. When I was 10 someone put a knife to my neck near downtown and threatened me for money, and although back in the early 80s we had riots in our public schools there. These are all true and I am sorry, but my memories of Orangeburg are not pretty.. I would not just pick on Orangeburg if this were not true..

If so, where can we live (my work will be in Orangeburg - Husqavarna plant) particularly schooling and safety point of view?
