Well, I assume you're talking about the town of Santee, on the Orangeburg side of Lake Marion. I have a house on Lake Marion, in the northeast part (Wyboo Swamp) near the airport. Most locals say "Santee" and are referring to the entire Lake area, not just the town.
As far a jobs go - that's a somewhat isolated area. Besides fast food, a few restaurants, marinas, gas stations, I don't think you'll find much. The big employer of the area is Santee-Cooper, a state-owned power & water company that built the lake. I'm not saying there are no jobs, but I wouldn't know what to tell you.
People - well, I don't think you'll find "night life" exactly. Lake Marion & Lake Moultrie are not very wealthy lakes. Pretty much anything "to do" there involves the Lake. fishing, water skiing, 'boating', cooking out in the front yard, that sort of thing. I wouldn't go there to meet new people, though. Just my .02.
Good luck, and have fun.
