As far as the fashion statement is concerned, I don't fully understand it, I don't condone it, but I also don't understand the outrage against it. Nor do I understand the purpose of prohibiting it.

This type of clothing is not just limited to the poor or to one race. I know rich kids that live in Carolina Forest that are white that wear these baggy pants.

Because they could probably argue that the law is racially-tinged (and there's no way anyone could deny the racial element of this law)
|
Three of the Jasper County Council's five members are African-American, including the Councilman who proposed this ordinance. The lone vote against the ordinance was from a white woman.

That doesn't mean that it could not be argued that the law is racially tinged any more than racial profiling can be disputed because some cops are Black.

You originally said that the racial element of this law is undeniable. I'm wondering why that is so. The law is racially neutral on its face. Both black and white councilpersons voted for it. And as others have pointed out, there are black and white people who dress in a way that would violate the ordinance.
With racial profiling, you have a situation where people are singled out solely because of their race. As I said above, if black violators are cited while white violators are not, then you have a problem. But there's no indication that the ordinance will be enforced in this way.

HOLD UP ... what about Character??
rubber_factory, Akhenaton06, usc_gal98 …
HOLD Up!
What happened to standards? Why we got to always protect the lowest, most demoralizing crap?
To those women who feeling so sorry for these “males” who walk out of their house with their pants down to their thighs … showing their dirty drawers … dear ladies … if you marry one of these … “males” … and/or have a child by one of them … who is going to be the man in that household to raise that boy child up with the sufficient character to successfully navigate the traps and pitfalls that will be in his path?
I spent 20 years working with almost every population social services was set up to serve. I’m a veteran who came back to the States filled with the same drugs, alcohol and sexual addictions that most every other veteran returned with. I'm not just talking out of a generation gap ... I KNOW what the outcome is!
In the process of saving my life, I HAD to learn that, “"t's all spiritual" … that Jesus was the Greatest example of manhood the world has ever known … and nowhere in the Bible do I read about him running around Israel showing His behind.
Ladies … I GUARENTEE you that if you marry one of these saggin’ guys who wear their momma’s stockings on their heads when they come to apply for a man’s job … with their shoes untied … that very shortly, you’ll be crying about how he done hit you … or he won’t get a job … or he's a dead-beat dad …
I'M BLACK. No … I'm a BLACK MAN.
Sadly, it often takes a long time to make a man.
Thank GOD some boys (black, white, yellow, brown, red, et al…) get enough good fathering to successfully carry on the next generation … but I assert that the majority of males (of all classes and genotypes) do not.
Tennessee Williams once wrote: "My father was a telephone man in love with long distance."
Child Psychologists, Theologians, and Social Psychologist now all agree, that the ONE relationship … the one that is the father to the child … that one alone can make or break a child.
I spit on the assertion that we have to bow to the false social construct that Hip Hop and Gansta Rap created … the assertion that says to be “real” or to be "black" … one has to be a criminal.
The Civil Rights Movement was won on a MORAL basis … a basis that says it’s not okay to treat a people like segregation and Jim Crow lynchings treated us.
Socrates once "said" that … "You write the laws … but let ME write the songs because the youth will act out the songs."
This didn’t happen by accident! Project Lock-up is the new plantation. One out of every American in prison is absurd! I won’t make a personal attack on this … but yes … I do want to point out how STUPID it is to support this kind of crap if you CARE for your children. No … if you CARE for yourself!
We are all interconnected. One race of human beings … otherwise we couldn’t procreate with one another. (Giraffes and tigers cannot have offspring with each other.)
A Captain from West Point once told me: "Fred, to be a man, you have to have character." I’d heard Martin's speeches, but I still didn’t know what it meant. So I went home and looked it up.
To have Character, you have to have integrity. (I do what I say and say what I do. My family KNOWS what I’m going to be like when I come home in the evening.) Next, to have integrity, you HAVE to have the capacity to be honest … and in this shame-based society, to even maintain even a finger-tip’s relationship with honesty … most of us HAVE to have a spiritual belief system that allows us to be authentic and humble enough to say who we really are … instead of who our “look good” or the role we’re playing says we are.
To support the demoralization what the Thug Kulture has done to my people and the black community would be akin to supporting the Klan. One close inspection, I first thought that you’d have to have a hole in your head to support such values for your child. But look at all these “parents” who actually BUY copies of video games like, “Grand Theft Auto” for their kids. (They might as well buy a copy of the Satanic Bible and tell little jr. to play with that while they go out back and smoke another joint.)
The proof is in the pudding. Too many killings. Too much self-destruction. Ain’t NOTHING good about saggin … and if you don’t have the good sense and the character to do something about it … then I’m a so glad that somebody in the government said … "enough. I am tired of talking my little girls out to a shopping center and having them forced to witness your indecent, demoralized, IGNUT behavior."

I do not like the saggy pants but I do not like the law or ban that Jasper County has passed. How in the world can a body of government tell someone what or what not to wear or how to wear it and how can people condone this action. Next it will be we don't like fat people ... (not obese which is PC)... but fat people ... let's ban them from the streets of Jasper County ... and then ... notice the BO ... let's pass an ordinance you must wear Jasper County Acceptable Deodorant we cannot allow any excessive perspiration in our Jasper County. Just remember Jasper County is near the elite Hilton Head Island and those old golfers wear their lime green and plaid golf pants up to their armpits ... totally gross visual there!
Socialism at it's finest ... coming soon to your town!

I got an idea ...
CarolinaWoman ...
You might be onto something thar CarolinaWoman.
I think I just got an idea on a new fashion craze ... and I think you'll like it. Tell me what chu think ...
I want to patent a line of men's pants (... because like it's been pointed out ... this is nOt an issue of black or white or rich or poor ... or even male or female because as Madonna can testify ... ever body likes trashy des heah deaz ...)
So like I says ... I want to come out wit a new line of men's pants ... and they'll look a lot like the "normal ones" ... and they'll be made like the others .. 'cept they won't have no zipper.
A man can just FLY free ... ya know?
Freedom of pants.
That's rite ... no zippa ... a man's private parts will jus naturally hang out. This way, he can walk down the street showing his ass AND his penis at the same time!
Women who like that sort of thing will have a load of fun!
(... by the way ... have you read the book, "Porn Nation?" Thar's so many men getting their intimacy needs via the internet that they've started marketing porn to women. For the first time, it's been documented that housewives are having to go into Treatment Centers just to get off porn. Amazing, ain't it? Oh ... there's another one of dem "Pink" books written by a young woman who is advocating REAL sex instead of women thinking that they have to behave like porn stars in bed all the time. I think I'll jus cut the zipper a little longer down for them ... ya think??)

Well SouthernLady
Personal attack ... !!!
Lookie like I stepped on a nerve.
If my "profile" had said I was from BC ... I'll bet you'd have said: "I can tell you're from British Columbia ... wat chu doin' in the South Carolina forum" .. )
Dear Lady ... YOU STILL didn't comment on my idea 'bout dem der pants. I keep-a askin' cuz you seem to know a LOT 'bout men's pants.
I mean ... I've traveled the world ... so … perhaps you can also tell me why you think I'm such a mental midget … after you tell me what chu think 'bout dem pants ...
