when we moved to our place we had a 'curby' and recycling bin waiting for us. the previous tenant didn't recycle--as the bin was in the backyard collecting rainwater & mosquito larvae , but we do. i think it's highly encouraged but i don't think it's mandatory. we just moved here, so i'm not for certain.

In the city of Columbia and surrounding Richland Co. there is curbside recycling, and you do not need to separate. There are also places around the city that you can take your aluminum, paper, cardboard too as well if you have lots of it and/or want to get a little cash for your scrap.
A pet peeve of mine is people who can't even recycle when it's offered as a curbside service, I mean is it really that much effort to separate them from the rest of your trash to help the environment a little bit? So glad to hear that you are already in that mindset of recycling upon moving here!

Sorry, no deposit here. I think it's a good idea though, to help encourage people to recycle and/or not litter.

we just want to know some ofthe things we will and won't have to do when we get down there. right now we have to recycle everything and we have to bring our bottles and cansback for your deposit, which imho is a pain in the butt . i would rather get rid of them at the cirb or at a
recycle station . that would be less pain in the butt not having to buy diferent bags.

No, in SC you just throw them on the side of the road when you're done. I personally don't do that, but judging from the amount of bottles and cans littering most rural roads, many people do.
As far as recycling, it depends where you live. Where I live in Lexington County, we have to pay someone to pick up or trash or take it to one of the collection centers. If you pay for trash pickup, they will provide you with a recycling bin if you ask. If you take your trash to one of the collection centers, they have separate dumpsters for recycling. They take the usual, plastic, glass bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard, oil, batteries, metal, etc.

That's where I think a $.05 deposit on bottles might help alleviate the littering problem (and it's not just in SC, it was just as bad where I lived in OH). It would at least encourage people to return them to a place where they wouldn't end up on the side of the road. Definitely a pet peeve of mine, people's apathy towards keeping their community looking nice and taking pride in keeping it clean.

I couldn't agree with you more! I'm from Michigan, so I can't believe I agree with someone that uses Buckeye in their screen name. Michigan has a deposit on most bottles and cans. Of course idiots will still toss some out their car window, but it isn't long before someone picks it up to collect the $.10. I think all states should have a deposit law on bottles and cans. Some of the roads I travel are an embarrassment due to all of the litter.
