From what I have seen in the area (Aiken, Barnwell, Jackson, Beech Island, etc), there are rundown areas scattered among the better, almost exclusive areas. I have seen rundown trailers next to half-million dollar homes. And believe me, coming from the Detroit area NOTHING is as rundown as THAT!

I think my friend will do just fine off of 278, as that puts her closer to work and makes her a bit more independent of me.

kat in aiken is on a distinguished road
I know what you mean - there is a really nice older horse property near the farmer's market that is surrounded by... umm... calling them shacks would be really polite. When we first came here I thought it was weird seeing nice houses surrounded by singlewide trailers or worse. Or, a nice house with 2 or 3 trailers on what is obviously the same property. We actually rented space in a lady's back yard when we first got here. She had several trailer spaces set up behind her house.

They do seem a bit liberal in their zoning laws here, don't they?

The "shacks" that Kat speaks of were the old servants homes for the folks that worked in the winter colony homes. If you drive down collengton Ave you will notice that the big beautiful homes run north and south but east and west were rows and rows of shotgun homes it was layed out in this manner to keep the servants close to the big house in case they were needed and to make getting to work easier .. Lately the shotgun homes have been brought up and sold as historical "cottages" to quite a few of the newer horse people I heard of one selling for well over a hundred grand. Go figure??

Yep, I figured that the little places were there for servicing the big places... so, did the big houses own the little places and then sell them off, or did the servants voluntarily buy next to their employers? hmmm... what a concept.

It depended on who you worked for. The museum offers a in depth tour of the winter cottage homes from time to time and the it is very interesting and worth a few hours of your time .. Also if you make an appointment you can get a guided tour of the museum and the guy who leads it knows more about the town history than anyone i know. There is also a self guided car tour of the area all you have to do is goto the museum and grab a map and guide.
