sallyo, if it's between Summerville and Columbia I would recommend visiting each. Summerville is about as close as you can get to Charleston and buy a home or rent an apartment for what you'd pay in Columbia for the same house or apartment. Columbia is a charming city without trying to be. Summerville is Lowcountry/semi-coastal. Columbia is lake country/fall line. It just depends on what you like.

Very good advice. When I moved to SC I spent a few weeks in each of the major cities. I quickly realized Columbia was definitely not a very nice place, IMO. I ended up narrowing it down to Charleston and Greenville, with Greenville ultimately edging out Charleston, mainly due to cooler temps and community attitude.
If you have the time sallyo, a few days in each place will give you a good perspective and help with your decision making.
Weare moving from ny to maybe summerville or columbia sc . which is the best place to live ,work, shop . does anyone know . homes forsale in fla were not great.winters are bad here.
Would advise spending a week in each one. Have lived in Columbia and was offered promotions to move there-turned them down. Live in Upstate area.
People who live in Summerville appear to really like it-close to Charleston and the beaches, but still removed far enough for small town atmosphere.
Things to consider-heat and humidity can be very uncomfortable. Occasional threats from hurricaines, even in Summerville. Charleston area has a more diverse social, political and economic atmosphere than rest of state.
Lexington is very, very conservative.
Columbia has two primary industries-USC and governement.
live in greenville, parents live in mount pleasant. have been to rock hill, columbia multiple times. can safely say that with all 3 major cities you'll pretty much get the same thing. there are just as many pro's and con's for each. rock hill is the only one that stands alone though because it is right outside a major Southeastern city (Charlotte). as one poster mentioned you can live in Rock Hill / Fort Mill, pay the lower SC taxes for basically everything yet receive the Charlotte experience. if i could find a job in rock hill i'd be there asap.
personally for me i enjoy greenville but i'm sure i'd enjoy columbia and charleston the same. columbia provides that capital city, major college town feel and we'll its in the middle of the state and gives you access to Gville and Chuck town as well as charlotte with relative ease. charleston provides that ocean experience, combined with a collegiate feel downtown, just can't stand the humidity down there.
