The downtown Charleston tourist scene tends to be Spring/Fall while the beaches around Charelston swell in the summer. Downtown still has summer tourists but not nearly to the degree of the Wildlife Expo, Bridge Run or early Spoleto crowds. Also- outside of lower portion of downtown and the beaches most of the Charleston tourists will go unnoticed. I grew up in Horry County and trust me- you know when there are tourists in Myrtle Beach from any part of the area. A lot of the area is overrun in the summer but the flip side is that in fall/winter Myrtle Beach functions as a much larger city because it has restaurants/stores/theaters to hold the summer crowds.

I've known a couple of people who were not thrilled living in Beaufort because everything is geared towards a moneyed crowd or the military. They were yonger when they lived there and your impression might be diferent but that is a sentiment I heard multiple times.

You would need to look at specific areas around Charleston because there are nice areas in all the subsections of Charleston and definitely some sketchey ones in each as well. North Charleston does have its share of less desirable neighborhoods but the city really sprawls to the point that some areas share no common characteristics with others. Price would play a big role in where you looked. Post back on the Charleston board for honest answers about traffic. A lot of people look durning that 10am to 4pm timeframe and are totally unprepared for changes that occur during rush-hour.

We live in Bluffton SC, about 1/2 hour to Beaufort and the same to HHI. Work, if you aren't in the tourist industry, is in Savannah--about a 40minute drive. I personally think Savannah is the place to be. I was on HHI and my husband in Savannah when we met, picked Bluffton is a mid-point but I'm ready to relocate---the housing market has us staying put.
