County:28,818 people
Bennettsville:9,425 people
63.2% Black
34.7% White
2.1% other
It's a very small town in the middle of nowhere. It's very poor (per capita income is a whopping $13,385). By national standards it has high crime (City-data.com crime index = 718.1 (US average = 321.8)), but by South Carolina standards that's just slightly above average.
11% of the population has a college degree, 5% of the population has a graduate degree.
The school system is bad. There is one elementary, one middle, and one high school. 85-90% of students in elementary and middle school qualify as 'economically disadvantaged'. The high school figure is around 70%, presumably because of all the drop outs.
Of the 16.9% of the students that actually take the ACT and thus attempt to go to college, the average score is 16.9. State average is 19.1, national average is 21.0. The average ACT for a University of South Carolina student is 25.
Hope this was the info you're looking for.

Excuse me, that should read:
Of the 20.9% of the students that actually take the ACT and thus attempt to go to college, the average score is 16.9. State average is 19.1, national average is 21.0. The average ACT for a University of South Carolina student is 25.
additionally, the unemployment rate is also high: 9.6%

Bennettsville is not a bad little town. It could be a great little town but I think it's stuck in the good ole boy mentality. Those that live here will tell you that the "old families" of this town don't want change so they don't encourage change. From my perspective, change is just what this town needs. It's really no different from any small town America. The residents need to stand up and demand positive changes. The school systems are not very good, but then you have mostly impoverished children attending these schools. Poverty and education make difficult bedfellows so to speak. Its a poor county so where do you start? You, as residents and politicians encourage outsiders to move here and invest in the community. It would be a great retirement community. There are beautiful Victorian homes here available for someone who has the funds to refurbish. The lake is beautiful. It has potential, it just needs enough people to care and turn the tides of this town. Would I move here again if my job didn't bring me here? Maybe not. Am I happy here? Yes. Have I met nice people? Absolutely.

It's the home town of Angela Hanna too who will be featured on Good Morning America this week, but do you think Bennettsville cares???? This town only cares about who's in a certain social clique. We have NO stores except for cheapies such as HiLites or Fred's. We have NO WalMart..can you believe that??? We must be the only town anywhere without a WalMart! We have to drive 20 to 50 miles to eat at a nice restaurant (if we don't want fat back and collard greens!). The school system is always bereated, but the "powers-that-be" will not hire teachers with advanced degrees but choose to import foreign teachers who the students cannot understand!! Now do you see why students don't well on the SAT or ACT? We have a superintendent without a doctorate and thinks that we should pay $750,000 for this old mansion to make into a "teacherage." Whoaaaaaaaa..didn't teacherages go out with the bath water?? Listen, bottom line..don't move to Bennettsville!

Poor area of SC. However, lots of beautiful Victorian homes available to refurbish and bring back to life. Some people love it here, others are turned off by the fact that the town looks like a run down remnant of what it used to be. Judge for yourself. I like the town, but am disappointed in the fact that there is no dynamic leadership to make positive changes here. Crime? Guess it depends on where you live anywhere in the country. And the school system leaves alot to be desired....again where are the city leaders here? Again, come and see the town and decide for yourself. We are desperate for some forward thinking movers and shakers!
